WAYSIDE CHAPEL TO CELEBLRATE CENTENNIAL I 5 11 photo by Michael Pearish
On Sunday. July 31, the Wayside Chapel, formerly Center Church of the Brethren, will observe its centennial. The morning worship service will be at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Billy Loucks as the guest speaker. Rev. Loucks was called to the ministry in the Center Church 52 years ago. At noon there will be a carry-in dinner for all who wish to come. Serving will start at about 12:30. The church will serve meat and coffee. In the afternoon the service will again be led by Rev. Loucks as speaker and several numbers of special music from neighboring churches, the Cummins Family from the Blissville Church and the Marvin White Quartet of the Baptist Church, Walkerton, will perform. Also a brief history of the congregation will be presented and there will be a time of reminiscening. The Center Church has erected in 1877 as a part of the Pine Creek congregation. In those days it was not all unusual for a congregation to have a number of meeting houses. Pine Creek had five at one time. The present meeting place was commonly referred to as the “East" house. The Oak Grove Church was referred to as the “North" and the Center got its name from being in the middle. There were also Blissville and Oregon Churches which completed the congregation. The Oregon Church was located in Oregon Township and it failed to prosper to any great extent and was discontinued quite a while ago. The other four meeting houses eventually, became separate congregations. Center was among the early ones to make this move and for quite a while was a strong church and produced a number of leaders which have been wellknown in the denomination. However, more than 50 years ago there was a migration of the farmers to the Dakotas, and this hit the Center group especially hard. The church has not been a large group since. About ten years ago the Church was disorganized and the building was sold. For a short time there was an independent community church there, but that also was discontinued and the property was sold to the adjoining cemetery association. Presently it is operating as a mission point of the Union Church of the Brethren of West Township, Marshall County. This group authorized it to function as a branch of their congregation so it could serve a number of the Union famil-

ies which had moved into the area. When it began operations it operated under the name of Wayside Chapel, but it is a Church of the Brethren group. Since its reopening it has been served bv Weslev Brubaker as pastor. The public is cordially invited to come and celebrate with us our centennial.
