BOOK ON SALE “The Argonauts Os Forty-Nine, ’’ by David R. Leeper, is being reprinted by the Northern Indiana Historical Society. The book is about the exciting saga of the gold rush days and it tells the true story of the adventures of several St. Joseph County men who left this area for the gold fields of California. Their travels, encounters and final success or lack thereof make this a most enjoyable and lively historical work. Few copies exist of the originally printed 1894 edition. It was published by the J. B. Stoll & Company, Printers of South Bend. The hard cover reprint contains 162 pages chock-full of exciting details of the perils these young men encountered. Within those pages are a list of
122 men from St. Joseph County who went on the great adventure in 1849, other local personalities such as J. M. Studebaker went with a later group. Also included is a 16-page appendix with many details of the trip west. Most important, though, the book is beautifully illustrated with 78 drawings by O. Marion Elbel. A limited time pre-publication sale is now on, but will end soon. During the sale, the book may be purchased for the low price of $8.32. The price will go up after this sale, so don't wait, get your order in early. Orders can be sent with the check to Northern Indiana Historical Society. 112 S. Lafayette, South Bend, Indiana 46601.
