America, was ratified Wednesday, June 15, by members of Local 12775, representing some 3,300 production, maintenance, construction, operating and laboratory personnel of NIPSCO. The vote was 2.194 for ratification, and 421 against. Bargaining teams for NIPSCO and Local 13796 - United Steelworkers of America, representing clerical workers, reached agreement on a new three-year contract in the early morning hours of Thursday, June 16. District 31, said. “The two contracts include annual wage increases, plus a quarterly cost-of-living adjustment based upon a COLA formula similar to that approved in the 1977 Basic Steelworkers Settlement. Other features of the pacts are improved pensions, life and medical insurance, holidays, vacations, working conditions and other fringe benefits. “We are happy,” they said, “that the physical agreement has been ratified and that a new clerical contract has been negotiated. We are especially pleased that these agreements have been reached without inconvenience or service interruption to NIPSCO customers and the public.” 1 he union leader said the clerical agreement is subject to ratification by members of Local 13796. Voting will be via a mail ballot distributed in the near future. SCREENING TESTS SET Blood pressure and diabetic screening tests will be done Thursday, June 30th, from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at the Hudson Lake Conservation Club building. It is not necessary to fast for the diabetic screening. Testing is preferred one to two hours after eating a regular meal. This program is open to the public and is free of charge. The LaPorte County Health Department Public Health Nurses will be doing the screening tests.
