Schaffer was northbound on County Road 600E when he failed to yield the right-of-way at U. S. 30. near Hamlet. His car was struck by an eastbound semi-trailer truck driven by Lloyd Phorman, of Fort Wayne. Schaffer suffered massive head and chest injuries and was taken to Starke Memorial Hospital before being transferred to South Bend Memorial Hospital where he died at 7:10 a.m. Phorman was treated at the Starke Memorial Hospital for minor lacerations and bruises.
