Mr. and Mrs. Charles Springman are staying a week with their daughter, Joy Fracker. Pine Island, near Rochester. Indiana. Mrs. M. D. Whitmer is a patient in the LaPorte Hospital and has had surgery. Cards will be appreciated. Mrs. Phillip Freeze and son, Gregory, were dinner guests of Mae Packer Monday. She came to help her mother finish the painting. Mrs. William Kurzhal. of South Bend, spent Tuesday forenoon with her sisters. Nellie Smith and Martha Taylor. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Whitmer, of Avon Park. Florida, were recent visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Strope. Mrs. Mary Perry returned to her home in Big Fork. Minnesota, after spending several weeks here with relatives and friends in North Liberty and South Bend. Effie Hammaker and granddaughter. Roxan Hammaker, of Leesburg, Indiana, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hammaker, returned from a month's trip to El Salvador. Central America, visiting friends in Armenia, Mr. and Mrs. L. Siguenza and family who took the Hammakers to many places of interest. They also went to Guatamula and seen much of the ruins from the earthquake and many other places of interest. It is a beautiful country, all tropical and 23 volcanoes with beautiful mountains and the ocean with a lot of fruit and four different kinds of bananas, even one you cook. It is all mountain and hills and the same temperature the year around with a population of four million, they had a wonderful time and hope to return next year.
It’s Strawberry Season * V \ V J With the appearance of fresh strawberries, summer has arrived and this Strawberry Blossom Cake is a perfect way to salute the season Combining the best features of American strawberry shortcake and a continental fruit torte, its prepara tion is simple An Binch layer is split horizontally to form 3 layers Then fresh, sliced strawberries and thawed Birds Eye Cool Whip non-dairy whipped topping are combined as filling for the layers and the whole is frosted with more whipped topping which has been tinted a delicate pink. Prepare the cake at least 2 hours l>efore serving, so the strawberry layers have time to mellow Strawberry Blossom Cake 1 baked 8 inch yellow 1 container (9 oz ) frozen cake layer, cooled whipped topping. 1 pint fresh strawberries, thawed hulled and sliced 5 or 6 drops red food 1 tablespoon con fee- coloring (optional) tinners sugar Split cake layer, making 3 thin layers Combine straw berries and sugar Top 2 cake layers each with 1 cup whipped topping and 1 cup strawberries Stack and top with third layer Tint remaining whipped topping pink with red food coloring, frost top and sides of cake Garnish with additional straw berries, if desired Chill at least 2 hours before serving Makes about 8 servings
There was a pot luck supper enjoyed Saturday night by 42 members of the Lowell Heights Church of Christ at Mrs. Earl Packer’s home. Many also enjoyed the beautiful park across the way from the Packer residence. The men played baseball while the ladies cheered them on. The Mothers and Daughters Banquet of the United Methodist Church was truly enjoyed and attended by many happy families. The meal was graciously prepared by the men of the church. Among the entertainment was a puppet show, cheered by many children, a farm ladies style show and a skit on Mothers. Clarence Heim was chairman. Mrs. Earl Packer went to Lafayette to fix the graves of her son, Victor, and husband, as the highways become more congested closer to Decoration Day. While there she visited her sister and sister-in-law, Mrs. Walter Leaman. Mrs. Hazel Ullery and Mrs. Vesta DeCoudres celebrated Mr. Charles Finch’s birthday by having a dinner at Bishops cafeteria. Mr. Finch was pleasantly surprised. Mr. and Mrs. Emory Thomson, of Sullivan. Indiana, met Mrs. Vesta DeCoudres and Mrs. Packer in Lafayette for dinner on Friday where they exchanged guests for the remainder of the week. Mr. and Mrs. Niel, Mr and Mrs. William Hartman and Mrs. Eunice Trickel, of South Bend, were dinner guests on Sunday of Mrs. Vesta DeCoudres. Mr. and Mrs. Claude Sheneman. of North Liberty. Mr. and Mrs. Dean Newcomer, of South Bend, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Lemert, of LaPaz, and Mr. and Mrs. Merle
Zehner, of near Walkerton, all enjoyed dinner together on Sunday at The Inn, Koontz Lake. They called on Mrs. Clara Thayer in Walkerton and then spent the rest of the day and evening at the Merle Zehner home. The Women’s Fellowship of the Church of the Brethren presented a skit entitled, “Great Women Os The Bible,” for their MotherDaughter Banquet held Friday evening, May 20. This was authored and narrated by Helen Hunter, of Koontz Lake. Characters were Ruth, portrayed by Colby Annis; Queen Esther, by Annette Shaw; Abigail, by Cindy Kime; Woman with son, Janet Houser and son Jimmie; Delilah, by Cindy Shafer; Mary and Martha, by Wendy and Kelly Medlin; the Woman wh touched Him, by Kay Liggett; and Lot’s wife, Patti Holderread. Costumes were designed and made by Edna Olinger. Inducted Into National Honor Scoiety at NLHS During induction ceremonies, conducted in the school gym on Friday, May 13, the following students were initiated as new members of the North Liberty High School National Honor Society: Seniors — Robert Albaugh. Other speakers included Nancy Beitler speaking on the topic of scholarship; Gwen McDonnell on Character; George Cole on Leadership; and Dennis Figg on Service. A reception for all new members and their parents was held in the school cafeteria following the induction ceremonies. Ron Hosinski is advisor of the North Liberty National Honor Society. LIBRARY TO BE OPEN TUESDAY MORNINGS Mrs. Joyce Zook, librarian for the North Liberty Elementary School, has announced that the Elementary School Library will be open on Tuesday mornings from 9:00 - 12:00 from June 14 to July 19. TRACK AND HELD DAY JUNE 3 FOR ELEMENTARY The North Liberty elementary school track and field day is set for Friday, June 3 with parents and friends invited to attend. The event will be held at the school playground. NORTH LIBERTY VAULTER QUALIFIES FOR REGIONAL Senior Kevin Leichty did his thing again as he soared to the 13’ mark at the Mishawaka Sectional last Thursday, May 19. Kevin has been improving steadily and did his highest vault in the Northern State Conference meet when he set a new school and conference record of 13’4”. Coach Glenn Keel says that he will probably have to do at least 13’6” to go further than the regional The proud coach added that Liechty is the only Shamrock to go to the regionals. One of the greatest sources of energy is pride in what we are doing. Inflation is when, after you finally get the money to buy something, it isn’t enough.
