Meissen, manager of the South Bend Social Securits Office. Monthls benefits mas be payable to disabled uorkers under age 65 and their dependents, including children disabled before age 22 uho continue to be disabled as well as certain other dependents or sur sivors(in the event of the death of the worker) based on the earnings record of the worker. Unlike retirement benefits, there is no special age requirement to meet, before applying for disability. Two other requirements, however, must he met. First, if you are the worker, you must have worked long enough and recent enough to be eligible for benefits. All workers, disabled at age 31 or older need credit for at least five years of work out of the ten years ending when they become disabled. For those disabled before age 31 and those disabled by blindness, the work requirement is less. While there are other criteria that must be met, disabled individuals applying on the earnings record of another, will only be considered if the worker had worked long enough under social security prior to death. Second, medical evidence must establish that you have a mental or physical impairment that prevents you from doing any substantial
