ORAL HISTORY SEMINAR Professor Lester Lamon, Associate Professor of History at Indiana University South Bend, and Anne Frese, Head Librarian at the Niles Community Library, will speak at an Oral History Seminar at the South Bend Public Library. The program, sponsored by the Area 2 Library Services Authority, will be onThursday, Mav 19. from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Professor Lamon's talk w ill cover procedures for conducting an oral history program as well as provide an historian's insight into oral history as a branch of historical research. Ms. Frese will share the experiences the Niles Library had last year when it began an oral history program. Professor Lamon is engaged in historical research in the South and is utilizing the techniques of oral history: collecting, recording, and preserving eyewitness accounts to history. CONSUMER ALERT Indiana Attorney General Theodore L. Sendak has issued the third in a series of four Consumer Alerts concerning the Deceptive Consumer Sales Act and misrepresentation of products or services. "Have you ever been to a sale," asks Attorney General Sendak, "and had the sinking feeling that the bargain or sale price you paid for that new shirt was not a bargain after all? Most of us have. Well, the Deceptive Consumer Sales Act makes it illegal for a store to advertise a specific price advantage, say reduced prices on shirts, when the sale price isn't any lower than the normal price.” If you feel the product that’s advertised as being "on sale" is not really reduced in price, ask the clerk to show you a price list or other evidence to prove the "bargain basement" price you’re about to play isn't really "Top Dollar ”, "Some ways may be obvious,” says Attorney General Sendak. "But there are also subtle ways you can be gypped and not realize it at the time. For example, we've all seen sellers' advertisements for cars. TVs. or other products which tell you thay are authorized dealerships. or factory authorized stores. The deceptive Consumer Sales Act makes it a violation of the law for a merchant to claim he has some kind of special or authorized affiliation with a manufacturer, or the government, when, in tact, he does not. ‘That may not impress you as being too serious, but a false claim of being an authorized representative could affect future service (including w arranties) on your new I V
