ENGINEERING SHOW SET Components and materials which will be going into the manufacture of new products will be the focus of attention when some 20,000 engineers converge on Chicago, May 9-12. for the annual Design Engineering Show at McCormick Place. Four hundred companies from 31 states. Canada. England. Scotland and Japan will vie for their attention. When a design engineer selects a component for a new product, the sale may run into hundreds of thousands — even millions —of units. With metric standards approaching. demand for low-energy products increasing, consumer demands for safe products pressing, and environmental considerations growing more important, virtually every manufactured product is being studied for potential re-de-sign. Cost factors and increased sales arc always major design considerations. according to Clapp & Poliak. Inc., New York exhibition and confernence management firm which produces the exposition. Highlighting the new ideas arc microprocessors for conventional products. A boom in these “smart" products is expected much as the development of smaller batteries for space exploration brought about self-powered, handheld appliances several years ago. Already, these tiny computcrs-on-a-chip are used in such diverse products as sewing machines, exercise bicycles, kitchen ranges, wrist watches and automobile engines. Score of similar applications are expected. Accompanying the show will be a conference with speakers from 29 states, the District of Columbia, Israel. Brazil and Egypt. Running on the same days in the same hall will be the National Plant Engin-
erring & Maintenance Show, also accompanied by a conference. Visitors to the combine events will make up the largest gathering of engineers in the country during 1977. Polygon Co., division of Plas/ Steel Products. Inc., Walkerton, will introduce products at the show. ASTHMA PROGRAM Robert M.
