HOOSIER HISTORY Indiana's oldest Protestant church still standing on its original foundation is the Little Cedar Bap tist Church near Brookville in Franklin County. Indiana Bicen tcnnial researchers point out. The Little Cedar Baptist Church was built by settlers in 1812. It was no temporary log house. (In spite of the dangers of the frontier, Brookville Baptist must have decided they were going to stay.) The church is a two-story brick building with high-backed pews and hand-hewn ash columns to support the balcony that gave extra seating room. The brick walls had rifle openings that could be used by worshipers in case of an Indian attack. A charcoal pit in front of the pulpit provided heat in winter. The restored Little Cedar Baptist Church is a present day reminder of our Hoosier Heritage. Crown Point is probably named in honor of Solon Robinson, an early Hoosier pioneer. Indiana University Bicentennial researchers say that there is a legend that the city was first named Robinson's Prairie about 1834 Solon and his brother. Milo, had settled in the area and built a cabin.
THE INDEPENDENT-NEWS - MARCH 31, 1977
When land speculators arrived and tried to take property away from his neighbors. Solon helped to get rid of the speculators. His neighbors gratefully named him "King of the Squatters." In 1840. when the town was laid out as a county seat, one of Robinson's neighbors, County Agent George Earle, suggested Crown Point as a new name. He explain cd that the Crown was for Robinson for being King of the Squatters. The word Point was for the high ground where Robinson’s cabin and the courthouse stood. Builders in Lawrence and Monroe Counties are often frustrated because they have to blast out limestone if a building needs a basement. Indiana University Bicentennial researchers note. But limestone is a natural resource that has provided a major industry for Southern Indiana. The stone belt is in an area some 35 miles long and five miles wide. About 1850 a Gen. Love opened the first quarry near Stinesville in Monroe County. The stone had to be blasted out of the ground and moved by hand-powered derricks. Early Indiana rail cars could not carry the heavier blocks. By 1914, freight rates on 100 pounds of stone from Bedford to Chicago were II cents and. to Cincinnati. 6 cents.

In the boom days of the limestone industry boarding houses were crowded with quarrymen, planers, cutters, and blacksmiths, as well as carvers. The stone blocks and carvings they produced were shipped all over the United States. Native-born Kurt Vonnegut Sr. left Indiana to study architecture, but he returned home to design buildings that Hoosiers are using today. Indiana University historians note. Born in 1884. Vonnegut attended high schixd in Indianapolis and sailed for Germany to take classes at Strassburg University. Three years later he returned to the United States to study at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. where he took two degrees in architecture. Back in Indianapolis, Vonnegut set up his office and put his imagination to work at the drawing board. His firm designed the Herron Art Institute. Shortridge High School. Eliza Fowler Hall at Purdue University, and a student building at Indiana University . The Kurt Vonnegut famils made a lasting impression on our Hoosier Heritage Linoleum was patented in 1863 by Frederick Walton, an English rubber manufacturer.
