Cancer Drive In Walkerton April 4 -7 Want to wipe out cancer in your ifetime? The National Cancer drive is April 4 thru 7 and our residents are encouraged to support ,nd donate to the local drive of the \merican Cancer Society. The purpose of the drive is to educate the public on early cancer signals and most of the funds collected will be used for cancer research . The cancer warning signals are a hange in bowel or bladder habits; a sore that does not heal; unusual bleeding or discharge; thickening or lump in breast or elsewhere; indigestion, or difficulty in swallowing; obvious change in warts or moles; nagging cough or hoarseness. If you have a warning signal. see your doctor. Volunteers are needed to help in the canvas of Lincoln Township according to chairlady, Mrs. Susie Reed. If you would like to volunteer call 586-3274 today. Captains to date include Mickey Wolfenbarger, Wanda Hiler, Diane Schmeltz, Bobbie Keck and Sandy lemert. The drive last year was also under the direction of Mrs. Reed and she would like to thank everyone who helped in any way. Together we can fight cancer . . . and win! NORTH LIBERTY HIGH OPEN HOUSE RESET A tentative date of March 17 was set for the North Liberty Night and Open House at the high school but due to the preoccupation with the important North Central evaluation and visitation adequate preparation ould not be made by the staff for the open house at this time. The open house has been reset for Thursday. March 31 beginning at 7:30 p.m. Please mark the date on your calendar and plan to attend. SENIOR FELLOWSHIP GROUP TO MEET The Senior Fellowship Club will have their regular meeting and carry-in dinner on Monday. April 4 at 6:00 o'clock in the Walkerton Community Building. The hostesses will be Helen Pogodzinski. Nellie Pfeiffer and Frances Kearney. The meetings arc very enjoyable and. it being Holy Week, will impress us the wonders of spring with grateful hearts for the fellowship and friendliness the club imparts. NOTICE The Oregon Township Homemakers Club will hold their next meeting at 12:00 noon, slow time, on Tuesday. April 12 at the Koontz l-ake Conservation Club building. The theme for the meeting is what kind of flowers did you have at your wedding. Ladies with their last names beginning with N thru Z. are to bring a covered dish. N.L. Children To Breakfast With Easter Bunny The North Liberty area children, preschoolers through fourth grade, are invited to have breakfast with the Easter Bunny at the North Liberty High School cafeteria on Saturday. April 2, beginning at 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a m. Tri Kappa chairman, Mrs. Michael Knepp, along with her committee members, Mrs. Jerry King, Mrs. Thomas McCormick and Mrs. Keith Riningcr, are in charge of the breakfast preparations. This event is being sponsored by the North Liberty Tri Kappa. North Liberty Volunteer Fire Department, Wells Local 194 and the North Liberty Lions Club. There is no charge for this event. Passion Play To Be Presented The 19th annual presentation of the Passion Play by the Cedar Road Missionary Church, Osceola, is scheduled for three performances in the Penn High School auditorium. The first performance will be on Palm Sunday, April 3 at 2:30 p.m.. Other performances will be on Good Friday. April 8 at 7:00 p.m. and Easter Sunday, April 10 at 7:00 p.m. Directing these performances will be Bill Malick, of Osceola. Principal parts will be carried by Bruce Mast, Osceola. Indiana, as the Master. James Ummd. of Elkhart, and Ed Heim, of Jimtown. as the Chief Priest. A supporting cast of over 50 adds to the excitement of the play. Authentic costumning and stage properties and backgrounds create a feeling of realism as the various scenes on the Passion of Christ are protrayed. Included in these scenes arc the Triumphal Entry. The Lord’s Supper, the Betrayal, the Judgement, the Crucifixion and Resurrection. The public is invited. There is no admission but a free will offering is taken. Seats may be reserved for groups by telephoning the church (255-9346). State Road 23 Closed For Work At Koontz Lake State Road 23 in the vicinity of Koontz Lake is closed right now for continuing work on drainage structures at the lake says State Highway Commission Executive Director Roger F. Marsh. Marsh says that the road is closed from U. S. 6 to U. S. 30 and was also closed in this area last August for drainage structure work by the Department of Natural Resources. That group is also doing the current work. Marsh notes. The official state route detour while State Road 23 is closed is over U. S. 6. U. S. 31 and U. S. 30 I hat is 26.8 miles in length and adds about 19 miles to the trip The closing of State Road 23 is for an indefinate length of time at present. JG And O-D To Host Concert In Walkerton The 3rd Annual Tri-County Honor Band Clinic and Concert is being co-hosted by John Glenn High and Oregon-Davis High Schools this year. The Honor Band consists of 90 outstanding bandsmen chosen from the ranks of the Argos. Bremen, John Glenn, LaVille. Triton and Oregon-Davis High School Bands. The students will rehearse together on Thursday evening. April 21, and will attend clinics and rehearsals on Friday. April 22. The highlight of the two-day clinic will be a public concert on Friday evening. April 22. at 7:30 p.m. in the John Glenn High School Auditorium. The guest conductor for this year is Mr. William G. Fread, band director at Blackford High School, located in Hartford City. Indiana. John Glenn students who are members of the 1977 Honor Band are Anita Ecker. Jill Northam and Jean Bughman. flutes; Diane Rush, Philip Knowlton. Mary Capek and Jenny Cochran, clarinets; Mashelle Pavey. alto saxophone; Sue Carter and Tony Hajicek, trumpets; Jerry Johnson, trombone; Jim Peacock, baritone horn; Scott Brovoid, tuba; and David Chapman, percussion. I PLJ Kindergarten Registration Set For April 7 There will be a meeting for parents and children eligible to enroll for kindergarten during the 1977-1978 school year April 7 at 1:00 p.m. at Walkerton Elementary School. To be eligible, a child must be 5 years of age on or before August 31. Children who have not had kindergarten and will be six on or before August 31 may be pre 1 registered at this time also. Health examinations and immu- ’ nization forms which parents should present to the physician at examination time, may be obtained > from the school during pre-regis-tration. Proof of age with a legal birth certificate (from the health depart ment of the county in which the child was born) is required, either now or in the fall when children are enrolled. Wearing of the green or Sham rocks, was the style on Thursday. March 17, St. Patrick’s Day at Walkerton Nursing Home. Thirtyfive of our residents helped rock from 10:30 to 4:30 with only time out for lunch. We sang Irish songs, heard about the legend of Saint Patrick, and history of Ireland. In the afternoon. Mrs. James Gilmer, with her talented fingers, played old and new songs and requests from the residents as they rocked and clapped to raise money for Walkerton's New Ambulance. Re freshments were served. The residents of the Walkerton Nursing Home would like to thank all the families and friends who so generously donated money to make our Rock-A-Thon so successful! We raised $435.00 which was presented to the Ambulance Committee on Sunday. March 20 as a part of our monthly birthday party. There were 92 at our party. The "Good Times" Dancers of Knox were the featured entertainment of the day. Thanks again to all who helped, especially Mrs. Robert Wardman and Mrs. Ed Klopfenstein. Mike Moorhouse Presented Eagle Scout Award Michael Moorhouse, a member of Boy Scout Troop 37, was presented the coveted Eagle Scout Award in a recent ceremony. Michael. 18, is the son of Mrs. Maureen Moorhouse, of Koontz Lake. Troop 37 is sponsored by the Koontz ake Lions Gub. Lion Charles Joyce is institutional rep resentative to the Troop Lion Arthur Borrelli made the presentation. John Simpson is the Scout Leader. The new Eagle Scout has been active in Troop 37 for six years He has served as Patrol Leader. Assistant Senior Patrol Leader and Senior Patrol Leader He was elected to the Order of the Arrow in 1976 He plans to continue his scouting activities with Troop 37. Ambulance Paid For With Funds The Liberty Township Ambulance. purchased recently, is paid -for due to action taken Saturday by the Township Advisory Board when they added an additional appropriation of $7,704 from Federal Revenue Sharing Trust Funds Tow nship Trustee Dale J Nelson announced that the payment of $19,995 for the recently purchased vehicle for the township has been made. The breakdown of the cost of $7,714 in Revenue Sharing Funds in 1976 with $2.52".8" in township funds and the 19’" sppropnation of $2,061 and the recent additional appropiration of $","04 makes the final payment Also the township has spent $2,554 02 for equipment that was purchased and ordered including sl,|9() for radio equipment which will provide con tact with either Memorial Hospital or St. Joseph Hospital in South Bend or the LaPorte Hospital The new vehicle is stationed at the North Liberty Fire Station In the meantime the A M. Manuel Funeral Home ambulance is in operation within the Liberty area Currently there are four certified emergency medical technicians in Liberty Township who took the course of 90 hours through the courtesy of Audine Manuel who underwrote the 19’3 program The tour who are qualified include Manuel, Duff Hevcl. Thomas E Jones and Stephen Cole. Ihere are seven more individuals who are presently taking the course at Ivv Tech. South Bend.
