Michigan. Highlanders defeated Ann Arbor Pioneers 50-44 to win the District 5 Class A Tourney last Saturday night. Jerry Johnson, former Walkerton High School basketball player, is the coach of the Highlanders. His son. Jerry Johnson. Jr., was high point man and leading rebounder. Another son. Kenny, is also on the team. The Saturday before they won the Capital Circuit basketball crown for the first time since 1937. They defeated Catholic Central, of Lansing. Michigan 57-51. When Jerry went to Howell seven years ago the team had not won a game for two years. Their District Tourney is the same as our Sectional. Howell’s record is 12-2 in league play and Ib-4 overall. Both marks are school records. UNCOLN TWP. CLUB MEETS The Lincoln Township Homemakers Club met on Tuesday, March 1 at the Community Building with 28 members and three guests present. Mrs. George Pfieffer later became a member and other guests were Mary Beth Grad and Joseph Gard, of Illinois, visiting here with Mrs. Nedra Smith. The meeting was called to order by the president. Mrs. Hazel Arseneau, with the salute to the flag followed by the club creed. The treasurers report was given by Mrs. Smith and last months minutes were read by Helen Decker. Both reports were accepted as read. It was voted to give $25.00 to the Ambulance Fund. Mrs Lois Sherland was our pianist and we sang two Irish songs. ’ When Irish Eyes Were Smiling.” and "My Wild Irish Rose " The birthday song was sung to Mrs. Laura Malstaff Mrs. Roy Jackson gave the health and safety lesson. Mrs. Dorothy Walsh gave us the citizenship lesson which contained a lot of good advice. Mrs John Guttman gave us some changes in the Readers Digest of (921 and the April 1977 issues.
RECEIVES SERVICE AWARD
Charles Dobis. center, and wife Sherry, left, pharmacist-manager of Hook’s Drug Store, located at Walkerton, receives congratulations from J. Douglas Reeves, executive vice president of the 222 store Indianapolis based retail drug chain, as he receives a Silver Knight Community Service Award at a recent banquet in Indianapolis. Mr. Dobis was presented the award in recognition of outstanding activity in community service. He was one of 34 employees from the chain so honored in the annual awards program. Reservations to the Spring Hing must be in by April 7. The affair w ill be held on April 19. The spring tour will leave the Scottsdale Mall on April 1 and cost is $6.00. A pancake supper will be held at the LaVille School on March 2b from 4 to 8 p.m. with a bake sale also. Anyone wanting to bake anything or help at the supper are welcome. Proceeds will go to the Esther Singer Building, South Bend. Anyone wanting to go or to send baked goods should contact Hazel Arseneau. 58b-3572. New officers are Mrs. Arseneau. president; Ann Jackson, vicepresident; Hazel Schultz, treasurer and Mrs. Burnside, secretary. There will be cancer sewing next Wednesday.
