Shamrocks Top Westville To Break Streak The North Liberty Shamrocks broke a six game losing streak and turned a big second half into a fine 86-63 victory Tuesday, February 22 in a make-up game from an earlier postponed date. Westville was the victim of the Shamrocks' fourth win of the season against 14 loses while the Blackhawks were slipping to a 7 10 record for the year. The balanced attack of the Shamrocks really was great to see for coach Jim Hcrter who has seen some very disappointing losses this scar and especially some not-so-good offensive performances. The game didn't start on a fast scoring pace as the two teams sparred back and forth in the opening quarter to settle nothing. It was all tied up at 12 each after the first eight minutes. The tempo changed rapidly in the second stanza as the shooting became much better and the play went from end-to-end with scoring on both ends of the court livening up the action. The Shamrocks pumped in a good 22 point total in this quarter but with this, only managed to gain a small 34-31 lead by halftime as the Blackhawks were almost still matching them point for point. The third and fourth periods were really all North Liberty's. After some early close action, the Shamrocks started to pull away with a well-balanced and unselfish attack accounting for a big 28 points in this period. The visitors were also scoring well, but not on a pace with the Shamrocks as the hosts broke to a safe 62-51 lead after three. Things really went well in the final period as the momentum continued and the Shamrocks just almost scored at will in the second half totaling another 24 points in the final eight minutes for a big 52 point second half. The visitors were really tapering off trying to keep up with their hosts, but fell completely apart in the final stanza as the final score of 86-63 indicates. Both teams had four players in double figures but the Shamrocks really spread their points around with both Griffey brothers. Scott and Bruce, as well as Tim Davis getting 18 points as the well-sized front line played well in this one. The playmaking guard. Bob Downs, had 16 also for the North Liberty team and the other 16 points were split between four players. Westville had two 16 point performances, Rick Wozniak and Rick Nunez collecting that number while Bob Ftranck and Jay Carter each hit double digits with 10 points apiece. North Liberty Downs Bremen 70-62 Friday The North Liberty Shamrocks won their second straight game Friday night as they handed the visiting Bremen Lions a 70-62 loss in a game that was never out of reach, but one in which the Shamrocks held a lead most of the way. The Liberty charges of Jim Herter again found good balance as this was the mainstay of their attack, having four players reach double figures to pace the attack. The hosts took a first half lead over the Lions that was only five points, but did manage to grab a 14-12 first period lead and then carry the advantage to an extended 34-29 margin at halftime. The entire first half was close as neither team could dominate the play, the Shamrocks leading most of the time. After the halftime break, the two teams came right back with even play and both recorded 12 points in the third period, not a big scoring quarter, but one in which the Shamrocks managed to maintain the lead and make Bremen play the catch-up game. Then in the final stanza, some good free throws shooting, especially by playmaking guard Bob Downs, who connected on 10 of 11 free throws, held off any chances the Lions had of coming from behind to overtake the Shamrocks. A big 24-21 scoring quarter found the hosts just increasing their lead into the final winning margin. Center Tim Davis again was the Shamrocks leading point getter, collecting 17 to pace the balance attack. He had eight baskets and one of his two attempts from the line were good. The big balanced support was 15 for Scott Griffey, who has taken a new lease on life late in the season after getting past a severe ankle injury earlier, Downs totaled 14 with his fine 10 free throws the highlight of his points and Bruce Griffey had an even dozen points. The hosts hit a very adequate 14 of 19 from the free throw line. Bremen was paced by Bill Hunter, one of the entire area's leading scorers as the 6’5” senior forward totaled 20 points to lead all scorers. He had 14 point help from center Greg Miller and guard Jerry Smith. The Lions also hit well from the line, getting 14 of 18 charity tosses to drop. B Team Squeak* By IJon* The Shamrocks B-Team won a real thriller, squeaking past the Lions reserves by a slim 41-40 score as these two teams set the stage for the excitment that was to follow. Shamrocks Win Third In Row, Top Wheeler The North Liberty Shamnxks ended the regular basketball season on a bright note as they won their third game in five days Saturday night as they topped Wheeler 76-69 on the Wheeler court. A real g<x>d offensive show, again featuring four players in the double figures, paced the Shamrocks to the win, the sixth against 14 games in the entire season. The final three wins in the five days matched their previous win total for the season but the Shamnxks dcfinatelv finished on their best streak of basketball of the season. They meet the John Glenn Falcons tonight (Wednesday) in the Plymouth Sectional and although a loser two times to the Falcons, are more optimistic at this point than any point of the season. The hosts, only a winner once this year but also a team that enters some pretty good competition, jumped to a first quarter lead as the Shamrocks did not enjoy their finest floor game and were not getting the edge in rebounds. However, the fine shooting. 50 per cent, offset some of the other ills. The hosts had a big 21 point first period and led by five. 21-16 after the initial stanza. The Shamnxks really got going in the second quarter as they started to score well, and also their play on defense picked up. By not turning the ball over as much and with some fine shooting, they raced to a big 26 point quarter and held their hosts to 17 to assume a 42-38 lead at halftime in a real free scoring ball game. The third period had that often witnessed slow down scoring as several factors lead to this. Halftime adjustments often make it similar to starting entirely over as well as the fact that the common foul enters into play again, keeping the free throw chances to a minimum. The "feeling out" resulted in just a 14 12 period, Wheeler getting the edge in this stanza but the Shamrocks still had their lead, a now slim two point margin 54-52. The final eight minutes provided more thrills as the Shamrocks held on to win. but couldn't put the game out of reach, coming back with another good final stanza for the 76-b9 victory. The Shamrocks balance was again the key asset on offense as Scott Griffey topped the list with 17 points while Tim Davis had 16, Bruce Griffey 12 and Bob Downs 10 in this game. Five other Shamrocks split the balance of the points to further extend the balance. The losers were paced by a 23 point performance by Spoljaric as he totaled 11 baskets and just one of three charity tosses before fouling out of the contest. Morton hit double figures as he added 16 points to the Wheeler total, he also left the game via the five foul route as did two more of the Wheeler players. The free throw shooting by North Liberty was not very good in this game hitting 16 of 31 and missing a lot of opportunities including some first shots of one-and-one situations. B Team Win* Big The Shamrocks B-Team won a very easy contest running away from the Wheeler reserves by a 60-30 score.
