TVS Power Dominates Glenn In Season Finale After starting off with as near perfect basketball for five and a half minutes as a team could play and getting the tremendous early 16 4 lead, the unpredictable John Glenn Falcons watch a real class team not only come back to get in the game, but win going away as the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings topped the Falcons KO-63 Friday night The game was just another chapter in the up and down Falcons season and w as their eighth loss against 13 wins this season. The Vikings racked up their 18(h win against a single loss in this contest and went on to a HI record the following night before their sectional tourney action The game climaxed the season for Glenn and six senior members as far as regular season play is concerned. The record has to be a little disappointing with the expectations of this club, having most phases of the game available but just not getting it together. Their play on occasions displays the potential and such as the opening five and a half minutes displays the possibilty of being great However. their 13-8 record going into the tourney action was molded against a schedule that had only five teams that ended with a winning record. Tourney action starts tonight (Wednesday) with North Liberty as the first round opponent. In the final season game, the Falcons hit like gangbusters, using a very balanced attack with good passing, getting good shots and with their tremendous height advantage. simply controlling the boards completely in the opening minutes. The 6’9” junior center. Scott Doll, hit after just 12 seconds

had passed from short range. Next it was the leading Falcon scorer. 6'5” senior Barry Heim with a lay-in coming from the side. Len Jaske. at 6'o” the smallest of the Falcon starters, was next with a lay-in and just seconds passed before 6'6“ senior Ron Haney hit for an 8-0 lead with less than a minute and a half gone. In this brief time, the Vikings had one time out to settle things down and they certainly only had one shot each time as they hadn't been near a rebound so far in the game. They finally got on the board at the 5:53 mark as Kevin Eaton popped an 18 footer. However. Glenn came back with another close in shot by Doll and Haney followed this just seconds later with a fast break lay-in. This made it 12-2 with 3:16 gone in the game. Greg Kindig. a 5'9” senior for TVS w ho w ill get as many rebounds and cause as much trouble under a basket as any 5'9” man. hit a lay-in for the Vikings but the two real muscle boys. Heim and Haney came right back with lay-ins. Heim coming after a fine over-the-top feed from Jerry Johnson. This made it 16-4 and the Falcons showed no signs of weakening at this point. Eaton hit his second basket of the game as the Vikings were so far content to fire from the outer range over the big Glenn defense. Doll came right back with his third basket of the young game and from this 18-6 lead with 2:46 showing, the Falcons almost looked like they were going to run away and hide from the visitors. This did not happen however, as the steady and confident Vikings never cracked and simply stayed with their regular plan and started to connect, finding some real holes in the Falcons defense. Particularly obvious was the fact they started some driving with simple fakes that more times than not
found a floundering Falcon trying to defense the player from behind with these simple, basic moves. Add to this, some good accurate passing and the 12-15 foot shots began to appear and these sharpshooters live on shots like this. A lay-in by reserve Jeff Johnson on a real nice move started w hat turned out to be quite a drive. Jeff Prater, their leading scorer on this very balanced team with a 16 plus average. connected on his first field goal of the night from 12 foot. Jaske broke the rhythm only briefly with a baseline shot at the 29 second mark but in the final 19 seconds Kindig hit from the side and Prater converted a fast break lay-in to pull the Vikes within six, 20-14 after one period. Despite the fact the Falcons still had the lead, the tide had changed and the little guys were starting to dominate the boards, put up a strong defense and certainly had their offense going. It took over half the second quarter before Doll scored for Glenn and in the meantime. the Vikings had completed a 12 point unanswered streak to take a 22-20 lead. Doll's basket came with 3:53 left in the half and ended a period of almost seven minutes with only that one lone basket by Jaske in the late first quarter. A basket from 18 foot by Eaton jumped the Vikings ahead again and after Heim put a medium length baseline jumper in. Derek Anglin got his second basket of the night. Heim hit one of two free shots and Haney put Glenn in front again with 1:31 left in the half as he found net from side court. However. three straight baskets, two by Prater and a fine lay-in by Kindig pushed the Vikings ahead for the final time and they enjoyed a 32-27 halftime margin. They had outscored the Falcons 18-7 m the second period and the third quarter was to be just more of the same. The green-clad visitors show ed no letdown once the second half started. Heim scored first on a lay-in but immediately TVS came back on baskets by Prater and center Eric Alspaugh who hadn't scored in the entire first half. Heim matched these two with successive baskets, the first from short range and then a 21 foot

bomb. However, once again TVS put together a streak. Eaton scored from 16 feet and then hit their first free throws of the night, making both of a two shot situation. Kindig found nothing but twine from 15 foot and Prater banged home one from the circle and then on the front end of a fast break he got a lay-in. Kindig put in a short jumper and then a rebound shot to complete a 14 point spurt before Johnson broke a four minute drought for Glenn with a pair of free throws with 2:13 left in the period. Anglin hit a rebound lay-in for TVS and then one of two free shots on a technical called on a frustrated Mike Jones of Glenn. Alspaugh hit one of two from the line as they now enjoyed a 19 point bulge. Haney put in the quarter’s last basket and after three it was all done but the talking as TVS led 54-37. In the two middle quarters the Vikings outscored the Falcons 40-17 to really demonstrate their dominance in this game. The final period was really a free scoring affair as the desperate Falcons did a lot of pressing, contact and loose play increased and the fouls started piling up in a game that had seen very few the first three periods. Despite the more physical aspect of the game and some very definate breaks of play in this type match-up, the Falcons could do little about the TVS lead. Late in the period, with a lot of garbage shots being collected underneath as the Vikings were determined not to loose it all on fouls. Glenn did pull within 11 at 72-61, but this came with only 1:46 left. It didn’t last as the visitors scored eight of the game’s last 10 points, the final two baskets after the reserves took over. Great Scoring Balance The victors had great scoring balance as the four “small” seniors did the bulk of their scoring. Prater had 24 on 10 baskets and a perfect four from the line. Kindig potted 18, all from the floor. Eaton 14 and Anglin 11. The Vikings hit 12 of 18 free throws in addition to their 34 field goals. The Falcons were again led by their two big senior forwards. Heim getting 25 despite a very cool 1 of 5 from the
charity stripe. He picked up six of his baskets in the wide open final stanza after the issue was decided Haney totaled 18, getting eight of his total also in this final period. The Falcons hit a very poor 7 of 17 from the charity stripe, a place that has been another inconsistent spot for them this season as they have won several games, including all three Bi-County tourney contests, from the line with great shooting. B Team Loaea Finale The Falcon reserve team drop ped their second decision to the young offensive minded Vikes also as they were previously beaten by TVS in the final game of the Culver Holiday Tourney. The final score was 62-48, but doesn’t reflect the true story of the game as the Falcons fought back real well after falling well behind in the early stages. Trailing 21-12 after the first quarter and then getting within five at halftime, the young Falcons actually led for a brief spell in the third period before the late offensive rush of the Vikings took over. The B-Team of coach Bob Young finished with a very respectable 14-7 record. Box Score TVS fg ft fta p Prater 10 4 4 3 K.
