FEBRUARY HEADLINERS The month of February honors two presidents with their birthdays and the traditional St. Valentine s Day. First is Abraham Lincoln. 1861 ■ 1865 served as our 16th President. He was a Republican. He was born on February 12. 1809 in a log cabin in Hardin County. Kentucky. In 1830 he moved with the family Macon County. Illinois. In 1832 he won election to Assembly and remained for a four year term. In 1837 he was submitted to the bar and became partner in a Springfield law firm. In 1839 he began practice on the Bth Judicial Circuit, in 1842 he married Mary Todd and they had four sons. In 1847 he was elected to Congress and in 1854 he was elected to the Illinois legislature — declined the seat to try for the U. S. Senate but lost. A In 1858 he was defeated by Stephen Douglas in the race for the Senate. In 1860 he was elected President with only 40 per cent of the votes but an electoral majority. In 1862 he announced that slaves in rebellious territones would be freed the first day of the following year. In 1863 he gave his famous Gettysburg Address. In 1864 he was re-elected President. April 9, 1965, Lee surrendered to the Union. April 14. 1865. Lincoln was shot in Ford's Theatre. Washington, by John Wilkes Booth. He was buried in Springfield. Illinois.

George Washington, our first President, was born on February 22. 1732 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. In 1752 he inherited 5.000 acres of land on the Potomac River, eventually owned over 110,000 acres. The Governor Dinwiddie of Virginia made him lieutenant colonel of the militia in 1753 and he fought with British General Braddock against the French. In 1759 he married Martha Custis. He supported protest of the British Stamp Act and took charge of Virginia troops before war began. On June 15. 1775 he was made Commander in Chief by the Continental Congress. In 1787 he became chairman of the Constitutional Convention. W He was elected President, the only President ever to be unam mously elected in 1789 with his inauguration on April 30. in New York. In 1792 he was re-elected. He rufused his third term and retired to Mount Vernon following his second term, 1797, He died at the age of 67 on December 14. P 99. St. Valentine's Day is February

Eventually the custom became so popular that profession al valentine writers were imported from England. Verses were written on gilt-edged letter paper and adorned with golden Cupids. Americanism Program Planned For Auxiliary The Orville Easterday Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary will hold a special Americanism program this Thursday, February 3. in the Post home at 8:00 p.m. Mrs. Amybclle Wardman is the chairman for the evening which will have special emphasis on patriotic events which are the start of another 200 years of Freedom in America. Mrs. Susie Reed, who was a Delegate to the National Democratic Convention, will be a guest speaker. Susie, along with two Auxiliary members. Mrs. Audrey Reed and Mrs. Pearl McConnell, will tell of their experiences while attending the Inaguration of President Jimmy Carter. Many Walk erton residents watched the events on TV but actually being a part of all the excitment in Washington. D.C.. is entirely different. Delegates and alternates of Hoosier Girls State will also be chosen during the program. Mrs Theresa Auman. Hoosier Girls State Chairman, has announced that six girls from the Junior Class of John Glenn High School will be special guests of the Auxiliary. Members will select two delegates and two alternates to attend Hoosier Girls State at Indiana State University. Terre Haute, during the week of June 19 through June 2b. The purpose of Hoosier Girls State is to educate our young women in the duties, privileges.
