This was the first year for the girls teams to compete in the Bi-County and the John Glenn team has the hon«»r of being the first winners. of mistakes were made in this eight minute stand to slow the play down The Fakonettcs made five baskets to just two for Argos with Kemp and Gardner each getting two and Huffstcttcr one for Glenn. 1 his let them take a 36 25 lead into the final period I he last quarter had a lot of free throws in it as play got more intense and speeded up with Huffstcttcr doing most of the ball handling lor Glenn and really drawing a crowd The Argos team nescr seriously threatened, in fact they made the game final two baskets to trim the lead as much as it was due to the fact that Glenn had jumped to 12 and 14 point leads in this quarter. It was just a case of too much for Glenn and despite some real determination, too little for Argos Boi Score John Glenn fg ft fin p Kemp 7 0 0 3 Skiles 3 2 7 2 Rvan 2 0 0 3 M Huffstcttcr 4 4 12 4 Gardner 3 13 5 (. arlson 0 0 0 1 TOTALS 19 7 22 IS

With the biggest team to ever via for the crown, it was this factor, their size, that made the difference as Satur das s contest was one of lay-ins and free throws for the now 10-5 Falcons. The Bi-County finally brought out some cohesiveness in the Falcons as they played more as a tram and less as individuals than they have for any combination of games this year. The teamwork was the big factor in getting the raster shots and paid off with thr win as they also collected a record number of free throws for the 12 year tourney as they continually

marched to the free throw and returned with their points, sinking HI in three games as in all three contests they were outscored from the floor bv several baskets by their opponents. The two muscle boys, Barry Heim and Hon Haney again led the wav in the three-game series to win the < row n as the offense hasn l been too well spread around and must come from these two. their real power if they are to win. Heim, despite a poor shixiting night from the flcxir. did gather a lot of baskets Within a six fcxvt ring to total 28 points as he also had eight fro throws Ihe6 6' Haney got 21 points, II of those come from the strijM- while the baskets were all verv dose range shots. Ihe loss dropped a g<xxl and voung New Prairie team to a 10-4 record, two of these losses coming at the hands of John Glenn. Andv Mills opened the scoring with a pair of free throws but Heim hit a reverse lav tn for the Falcons. Mills, one of only two seniors to plav any amount of time for the Cougars, hit again from the right baseline, medium range, but Jerry Johnson matched these points with two charity shots. Haney then gave the Falcons the lead, a lead that was never to be lost or tied the rest of the night, as he hit a rebound lay-in. Heim added one of two free throws but then canned an easy lay-in on an out-of-bounds plav to make it 94. Dennis R/epka got his first of nine baskets for the Cougars and Jon Schaefer hit a lay-in. Johnson, playing the best half of basketball he has played all year from the guard position, hit a lay in as he was penetrating well in the initial lb minutes of the game. This was matched by another baseline 14 fooler by Mills, but Johnson pulled his act again for another driving shot from the lane. R/epka. a very fine shooting guard, canned a 21 fooler but Johnson got his third basket on a drive and was fouled to make it a three point play. Mills ended the quarter scoring a 13 footer to make it Glenn IK. Cougars 14 after one. This lead was upped to eight early in the next period with Johnson and Len Jaske hitting back-to-back baskets. However, the Cougars used the line themselves to get a pair of one-pointers by each Mills and Greg Samuelson. However. Haney matched two of these to start a Falcon drive that started to expand their lead. Alter Sc haefer hit a shot from the comer. Jim Nunley scored on a fast break lay-in and Haney a rebound lay-in. Rzepka swished another but Johnson converted another three-point play as he was simply muscling his way under the basket and eluding the offensive fouls on several occasions. Schaefer was on target from 17 foot but Heim got two lay-ins in succession and added one of two free throws as the Falcons moved in front by 12. R/epka tickled the twine from medium range but Heim's rebound shot offset this. R/epka then got another short baseline basket and Mills two charity tosses, but Haney and Nunley hit back to-back lay-ins for the Falcons. R/epka's fourth basket of the period ended the half with Glenn holding a 10 point spread 42-32. The Falcons looked like they were going to put it away early in the final half. Haney opened with first a lay-in and then a three-point play on another underneath shot. However, the IS point margin started to disappear as once again the Falcons couldn't deliver the crushing blow and watched their opponents crawl right back in the game. Schaefer was first and then it was Rzepka. Mills scored from in dose and Scharfer got his second basket in the quick string to make it 47-40. Heim broke the spell with another lay-in but Mills came right back with two baskets to trim the lead to five. After Haney canned two free shots. Mills got his fourth basket of

Heim got another lay-in for Glenn but two more baskets by Schaefer found the Cougars within three. 55-52. At this point, the turning point came as on two occasions the Cougars had a chance to get within one point but missed on both occasions and at this point the Falcons displayed some character by starting to fight back after watching the scrappy Cougars take the mcmcnturn of the game away. Heim hit his first shot of the night from the floor, an 11 footer and after the sizzling Schaefer popped his fifth basket of the period. Heim and Nunley hit two free shots each but an 18 footer by Rick Albertson right at the gun made it 59-54 with just one crucial quarter left. The Falcons increased this lead early as Nunley hit first after stealing a ball he drove for a solo lay-in. Schaefer hit a rebound basket but Haney put in two more of his onepointers. After one of two free shots by Mills. Heim was perfect tour times in a row from the line as the lead increased to 10. R/epka converted a three-point play but Heim came right back with another lay-in before a five point Cougar spurt pulled them within five once more with 1:19 left in the game. Ed Beasley got a key lay in as Glenn was in their version of a four-comer offense. Heim then got another "bunny” on an out-of-bounds play and it was now just a matter of time with less than a minute left. The Falcons added six free throws in the final half minute to account for the final spread of 79-71. Heim and Haney's totals of 28 and 21 topped Glenn and Johnson added 14. all in the first half, to account for most of the Falcon points. Mills, a hard working forward at 6'l". who makes things happen, collected 22 for the Cougars while Schaefer collected 20. all on baskets, and Rzepka 19 for the bulk of their points. The Falcons totaled 25 baskets and 29 big free throws to the Cougars 29 baskets and only 13 charity tosses.
