Breaking a37 all tie at halftime, the Falcons hit hard and fast paced by a 14 point quarter by Barry Heim to take a lead that was never again threatened. Using a pressing defense to spur up the offense, the Falcons caused turnovers and got some easy baskets to decide the game. The win upped the Falcons season mark to 9-5 while the Shamrocks slipped to 3-9. The Shamrocks looked very good from the start. Glenn's Jerry Johnson opened the scoring with a lay-in but this was shortly matched by Tim Davis. Scott Doll, 6'9” junior center, put Glenn back in front with a seven foot baseline shot but Davis snapped right back with a short baseline bank shot of his own as the action was fast and furious as less than a minute had elapsed. The Shamrocks then moved to the lead as Bob Downs pegged in an 11 footer and Dave Reed then upped the margin to four with a short shot from the lane. Heim connected on his first points of the night with a 17 foot side shot but Davis came right back with a 19 foot bomb of his own and Reed popped from 12 foot to make it 12-6 North Liberty as the Shamrocks were playing well and taking the action right to the Falcons. In the space of a minute and a half, the Falcons fought back to tie as Ron Haney put a rebound back up and in. Len Jaske hit one of two free throws and with 32 seconds left in the quarter. Haney's threepoint play on a lay-in and foul knotted the score at a dozen. However, some quick fireworks by the spirited Shamrocks led to a rebound basket by Davis with :I9 seconds left and after a change of possession Reed put a missed long shot back up and in just ahead of the buzzer to make it 16-12 Shamrocks after one quarter. The second quarter found the scoring pace quickened considerably as the Falcons again used the free throw line to great advantage After a driving lane shot by Bruce Griffey opened the scoring. Johnson hit two free throws and Heim connected from the corner and was fouled. He missed the third point, but came back a half minute later with an II footer to make it 20 all. Davis hit two charity tosses as the muscular senior center was playing as hard as anyone could play in the game. Heim matched these two one-pointers but Reed converted a three-point play on a tip-in which

could actually have been a fourpointer as the foul on Johnson was called after the tip. Haney matched the three-pointer on a lay-in and Glenn regained the lead for the first time since the opening minute as Jaske took a good Heim pass on a fast break for a lay-in. However. Davis came right back with another three-pointer on a nine foot shot. Heim tickled the twine from 17 foot but Downs lined in another of his flat jumpers with 3:05 left for what proved to be North Liberty’s final lead of the night. Heim swished a 10 footer and this was quickly followed by two free throws by Johnson, a single point by Haney on a technical foul and then Jim Nunley’s lay-in and two more charity pitches by Johnson as the Falcons moved ahead by eight. 36-28. with 1:41 left in the half. The Shamrocks displayed some character at this point as they were losing to the press, turning the ball over and on the verge of falling well behind, only to some storming back in the closing seconds to gain a 37 all tie. Matt Weiss hit two free throws to start the comeback drive and Reed then tallied from the floor. After one of two Heim free shots found range, Scott Griffey hit one of two. collected his first basket of the tourney on a short baseline shot and Matt Weiss climaxed the half with a basket with 11 seconds left to force the 37-37 tie. The third quarter was similar to the previous week, differing only in the fact that the Shamrocks weren't shut out for any long periods of time. The Falcons put on a press, really forced the action and put the ball in the basket at a rapid pace for that one string that was the game. Heim opened with two baskets before Scott Griffey hit a lay in. A three-point play by Haney was followed by a rebound basket by Heim after some fierce action under the boards. Matt Weiss canned an 18 footer but Heim matched this for Glenn. Davis scored from under but Nunley found range from 14, Jaske got a solo lay-in after a steal and Heim put a bunny up and in from underneath for a 13 point spread. Davis again retaliated for the Shamrocks but Heim hit the game's longest basket, a 23 foot bomb and Johnson scored another lay-in to make it 60-45. This 23 point streak against the Shamrocks eight took just under four minutes and then play settled down to a more steady pace and the play was again even from here. By the end of the quarter, the Shamrocks had nipped the lead by two and trailed 68-55 in a free scoring ball game. The final stanza didn't find any streaks, outstanding plays or really tight action as play got loose with turnovers, fouls and mistakes taking a lot away from the previous three quarters. Only when the score was 82-65 late in the quarter did any streaks come about as the Shamrocks last hurrah was an eight point string that was stopped by the Falcons getting the last five points in the closing minute to establish the final More. Heim again was the offensive leader for the Falcons as the 6'5” senior netted 28 points on 11 baskets and six free shots. He had 27 of his points in the first three periods and picked up only a single free throw in the last six minutes he played. Haney chipped in with 18, almost all of them from right under as once again the Falcon muscle was the difference in the game. Johnson added 14, eight from the line, and Jaske reached double figures with 10. For the Shamrocks Davis fittingly was their leading scorer as he totaled 25 points as he put more into the game than any other two players combined. Special credit has to be given his effort as he keeps going no matter how much it hurts which most fans will never know. Reed chipped in with 15. Scott Griffey 11 and Malt Weiss 10 for the other double figure efforts as the Shamrock offense played well, but they couldn't control the tempo of the

game enough to stop the Falcons. This game incidently set a new BiCounty record for total points of 160, eclipsing the previous mark of 157 in 1973 when Glenn blasted the Culver Military Academy in their debut to Bi-County action. The young Dragons used the free throw very successfully as the much quicker and faster team was drawing fouls and hitting them very well Io cap the job they had done throughout the game In the final six minutes, the Dragons hit no less than 17 chanty pitches to hold off the tremendous one-man rush of Tom Moore for the Falcons. The Argos team never trailed as the four freshman starting five really showed a lot of class and savy for coach Lee Zumbaugh, former Tyner player and now in his first year coaching the Argon B Team. They took two leads right at the offset, tied by Glenn, but then broke to the front to stay. Doug Jennings hit a rebound shot to start things going. Tom Moore hit his first two points of the night, a pair of free shots, but Don O'Dell came right back with another basket for Argos. Bob Muncie found the range from nine feet but Jennings then put in the first two of 12 free throws he was to make in the game to start an eight point Argos streak. Mark Malone hit next, then O’Dell and Jennings as the young Argos team was really getting the good shots and making them good. A pair of baskets by Moore cut the lead to four, but O'Dell hit again with 34 seconds to go in the quarter to start a lot of action in the last seconds. Moore followed with a 14 footer, but after Jennings converted a three point play with 04 remaining. it looked like a 17-10 Argos lead would hold up until Moore pulled another one out of the hat to crack a 27 footer at the buzzer. He accounted for 10 of the first quarter points for Glenn while Argos had nine from Jennings. The second quarter was more Argos dominated, with free throws the common thing as the two teams only combined for six baskets, three by each squad. However, the hustling and speedy Dragons were taking the play directly to coach Bob Young’s boys and consequently drawing the fouls. Argos got 12 second quarter points, six by Matt Chamberlin while Glenn collected only eight, four by Muncie, three by Drew Adams and a single point for Conrad Kriskovsky. By halftime the Dragons had expanded their lead to 29-20 as

they were dominating the Falcons. The third quarter started as if the Dragons might run away and hide from the Falcons as scoring was slow, but heavily in Argos' favor. Jennings hit from 12 foot to start the scoring and after Moore, held scoreless in the second quarter, hit for Glenn, O'Dell came back with two baskets as more than half the period had elapsed. Moore hit again from medium range, and after Jeff Stratford scored from 13, Jennings got two straight Argos baskets to open a 13 point gap with just 36 seconds remaining. However. in these closing seconds. Mike Dreessen hit two free throws and Stratford added two more to keep the nine point difference Argos enjoyed at halftime. The last six minute stanza was something else. Points came fast and furious. Argos using the free throw line and Glenn using their only consistent weapon. Tom Moore from all over. One of two charity pitches by Tom Zentz started the ball rolling and Jennings added a rebound shot from the lane. Dreessen hit one of two free shots and Muncie put a missed Falcon shot back up and in to keep it at nine. Jennings added two more single points but Stratford tallied on a tip and Muncie got a lay-in on which he was fouled, but failed to convert the third point. This made it 44-37 with three and a half minutes left to play. This was the cue for Moore to take things in his own hands for Glenn, but he couldn't get the job done against the entire Argos team. Jennings scored first, two free throws before Moore swished a short side shot. Chamberlin got two more one-pointers but Moore again matched these points from 14 foot. Malone was next for Argos but once again Moore came right back with another Falcon basket. Two more Jennings free throws were followed by two by Moore and then he added a basket to trim the lead to 52-47 with :59 showing on the clock. Jennings was fouled again and that was just like putting two points on the board, which he did. Then came Moore again, hitting a basket with 35 seconds left and being fouled after the shot to get a one-and-one. He hit both ends and it was 54-51, but the Falcons had to foul to get the ball and that was just more points for the Dragons as their free throw shooting was uncanny. Malone hit the first two, then Chamberlin added two more as Argos regained possession before Moore put in his final basket of the night, a 16 foot jumper that gave him 16 points in a little over three minutes. O’Dell’s final two free throws just settled the final spread at 60-53. Moore paced all scorers with 30 points as he really put on a show for the crowd. He totaled 12 baskets and six charity shots. Muncie got to double figures w ith 10 points but

IS IT REALLY OURS?

the difference was basically no offense from under against the Argos defense. Jennings ended the night with 28 points, picking up eight field goals and 12 free throws. O'Dell had 15 points and Chamberlin 10, eight of his from the line. Glenn Girls Win First Bi-County Girls Tourney The John Glenn girls won the first-ever girls Bi County basketball tourney Saturday night handing Argos a 45-36 defeat in the final game played at La Ville. The Glenn girls, who certainly show a lot of hard work to produce their efforts, arc definately further advanced under coach Barbara Osowski than most of the other girls teams in the surrounding schools The Falconettes started a little slow , not getting much going in the way or movement early and not getting the ball to Mary Huffstettcr. who makes things happen and usually the right thing. Argos took advantage of the early slack as thev did have a couple of girls that could shoot when not bothered and they responded with the first three baskets of the game before Theresa Kemp got the first Glenn points after almost three minutes had passed. From here on. the Glenn girls, probably getting more accustomed to the crowd and surroundings. started to loosen up and the two teams battled about evenly for the rest of the first quarter with Argos still holding the lead. 13-8. after one. The second quarter laid the pattern for the rest of the game. The Falconettes came to life, got more mobile on offense and especially on defense and shut off the easy unbothered shots by Argos to really take command. After Julie Williams upped the margin to 15-8 with two free throw s after half a minute had passed, the Falconettes ran off 14 points in a row to take a lead they never lost. Pam Skiles hit first on the front end of a fast break and just 20 seconds later a rebound lay-in by Kemp turned into a three point play as she was fouled. Kerri Gardner hit one of two free throws and Skiles came back with two more to take the lead for the first time Kemp added another rebound shot and Skiles hit the next two baskets to make it 22-15 before scrappy Bert Thompson broke the long Dragonette drought with a basket as only 1:50 remained in the first half. Williams matched this for Argos but Huffstetter and Kemp hit back-to-back before Lisa Anck hit the final basket of the half for Argos, this making the halftime score Glenn 26.
