I Falcons Topple North Liberty 34-12 Friday The annual battle between rivals lohn Glenn and North Liberty took place Friday night and for the first time in several years, more than a touchdown difference seperated the two teams when the fianl score was determined. The Falcons of (Henn was spearheaded by a very solid defense against the rush and completely took away the ground game from North Liberty to control the offensive efforts of the Green and White until some success came in passing late in the game. In the meantime, the Falcons were mixing up their offense just enough and taking advantage of some opportunities to pile up a four touchdown cushion before North 1 iberty could get on the board. The final result was as convincing 34-12 victory for Glenn in a game that hard-hitting was very common and even though tempers did get warmed up" little resulted other than hard football. This kind of a break can give a team a great lift and the Falcons took advantage of it by going in in four plays with Len Jaske carrying the final II on a fourth and 3 situation. I he extra point kick was wide, but 'hat 6-0 lead meant so much early in the game. The Shamrocks were able to move well into Falcon territory after the kick as a return by Rick Naragon put the ball on the Falcon 18. After gaining one First down m a couple of Bob Shipley rushes, the Sharm«ks eventually turned the ball over at the Falcon 30 when a fourth down run came up two vards short. Then the battle of the punts started as neither team could sustain a drive. Glenn took possession after the

Shamrocks third punt with 5:23 left in the first half as they were starting on their own 16 yard line. An over-anxious defense for the Green and White three times were called for encroachment and with a 6 yard run by John Briggs Glenn had gained two First downs and had the ball on their own 38. On first and 10. Paul Groves dropped back and let fly with a long pass that Ed Beasley caught behind the Shamrock defenders and raced into the end zone, being caught just as he crossed the goal line. This big play caught the Shamrocks by surprise and boosted the score to 14-0 after Jaske ran in the tw o extra points. Only 3:35 remained in the half at this point. Despite the fact time was against them, the Shamrocks went right to work and the excitement was far from over in this half. Starting at their own 2b, a 10 yard pass from Alan Seiner to Mike Weiss picked up one first down and a Glenn roughing the passer penalty gave the visitors another. On a fourth and 14 when things seemed well in hand, a 44 yard bomb from Seiner to Mike Weiss gave the Shamrocks a first and goal at the 5 with 1:26 left to play. Using their timeouts so they weren't rushed, the Shamrocks tried four solid cracks at getting the ball in but the solid thing was the Falcons’ defense, which yielded only two yards in the four plays. This was their second big goal line stand in two games and really swung the momentum in Glenn's favor as they were able to run out the clock with one play and preserve the 14-0 halftime lead. The third quarter found the Falcons maintaining the momentum they picked up late in the first half to decide the ball game. They took the opening kickoff and starting at their own 41, toured the 59 yards in nine plays with their third play from scrimmage going all the wav on a pass from Paul Groves to David Groves only to have a clip bring the ball back to the 34. It took just six more running plays from here with the big play going almost unnoticed as Briggs recovered a fumbled snap on the Shamrock four yard line to retain possession and Jaske skirted end for the touchdown on the next play. After a penalty on the attempted kick for conversion cut the distance in half, the Falcons went for two but a run was unsuccessful and it remained 20-0 with 7:32 to play in the third period. The Shamrocks took a short kickoff back to their own 48 and with a fourth and Five from the Glenn 47 and trailing by 20. they went for the First down and were stopped. This gave the Falcons Fine Field position and starting on

their own 46. they moved the 54 yards in 11 plays despite a Glenn holding call in the drive. Jaske again hit the end zone taking a pitchout and running wide even though it covered only one yard. Paul Groves this time kicked the extra point and the 27-0 lead was enjoyed with only 1:06 left in the third quarter. This forced the Shamnxks into a passing game and after the kickoff Seiner really came out throwing. He hit four passes in a 56 yard drive as he threw on seven consecutive plays and with gixxl protection. he was drilling the ball well to set up a one yard plunge on the eighth play by Shipley. This came just after the last quarter had start cd and they tried for two points on a run which failed, but the Shamnxks were on the board. They followed this with an onside kick that was covered by Joe Romwalter after a Falcon couldn't field it. Starting right at midfield, they churned up the 50 yards in nine plays and only 2:28 of the clock as four running plays, a Glenn personal foul, one completed pass and a Falcon offisde moved the ball in w ith Shipley flying over from six yards out. He wasn't to be denied this score which, with a two point conversion could put the Green and White back in the game. However, the pass for two was completed but stopped short of the goal line and it was 27-12 with 8:23 left in the game. The Falcons wrapped it up on the next possession. Jaske almost broke the kickoff, but did return it to the 44 where a 12 play drive. 11 rushes and a little two yard flare pass pushed the ball across as Jaske picked up his fourth TD of the night, running in from 10 yards. Dennis Cripe* b<x>ted the extra point and with 2:14 left it was 34-12. the game now decided.
