This raises the Falcons record to 3-1 and evens their conference mark at 1-1 while LaVille. making their first conference appearance, is 2-2 for the season. The Lancers moved for a couple of first downs before punting in the end zone. On the first play for the Falcons, a John Briggs fumble was recovered by Ron Kopola for LaVille at the Glenn 21.

A Falcons illegal procedure call was followed by two cracks into the line that netted a first and goal situation at the 9 yard line. After gaining to the five on a Will Shepherd carry, the quarterback, Dennis Freehauf, was smeared on a mixed up play for a nine yard loss. A four yard gain put the ball on the 10, fourth and goal, and even though everyone knew pass was coming, Freehauf managed to get the ball in the end zone to a waiting Bill Rash for the score. A quick pop to tight end Joe Fraschetti put two points on the board on the conversion and with 5:24 remaining in the first quarter, the visiting Lancers had an 8-0 lead. The Falcons still sputtered on offense for some time but on the last play of the first quarter, Len Jaske intercepted a pass and returned it 31 yards to the LaVille 19 yard line to put play deep in Lancer territory. Hurt by a holding penalty, the Falcons ended up fourth and 12 from the 21 and an incomplete pass gave the ball to the Lancers. The Falcons defense then really rose to the occasion. A key 12 yard smear of Freehauf on a passing attempt, set up a third and 26 from the 5 when LaVille quick-kicked. The strategy gave the Falcons possession on the Lancer 41 and one a third down play where a first down was gained by a yard on a run by David Groves, the Lancers were called for piling on, setting up a first and 10 at the 15. After a rush into the line lost one. Paul Groves hit Jaske coming out of the backfield on a swing pass that netted the 16 yards to the end zone. An attempt for two points on a pass was no good and with 6:58 to go in the first half, it was LaVille 8, Glenn 6. The second half opened up with a little more fire by the Falcon

offense. They gained two first downs on their first possession, one big 25 yard completion on another Paul Groves to Jaske pass. However, their drive stalled at the Lancer 17 where LaVille took over. After gaining two first downs of their own, the Lancers had a fourth and 6 from their own 45 and were back in punt formation once again. However, a fake kick and a handoff on a reverse to Jay Sauer might have fooled some but Jaske was not swayed by the deception and creamed the runner for a big 14 yard loss, giving the Falcons a real shot, first and 10 at the LaVille 31. A seven yard gallop by Jaske and then a one yard loss in the middle set up a key third and four. This time Paul Groves flipped a perfect lead pass to cousin David Groves coming out of the backfield and the little senior halfback gathered it in perfectly and went in unmolested for the go ahead touchdown. Once again a pass attempt for two failed, but the Falcons had gained their first lead of the night 12-8, which eventually was the final score only not until the Glenn defense did the job up right. Plenty of time remained with 3:12 showing in the third quarter when the Falcons went ahead. On the next possession, LaVille was forced to punt but Glenn matched this punt after gaining one first down. LaVille punted back to Glenn but on first and 10, a Falcon fumble was covered by LaVille’s Pat Grzesiak, taking away ball possession opportunities from the Falcons with 7:50 left in the game. The Falcon defense forced another punt, this time a good 38 yarder as it rolled for most of the distance. Glenn went to work at their own 24 yard line but on second down, Paul Groves was hit as he attempted to pass but the call by the referee was fumble and not an incomplete pass and everyone was caught a little by surprise by this as the Lancers Bruce Amor recovered the ball at

the Glenn 16 but could have just as easy picked it up and walked into the end zone with this one. This did give the Lancers excellent field position with time a big element but after a time out called by coach John Hostrawser to let cooler heads prevail and to get reorganized after the “big play” went against them, the Falcons defense stopped the Lancers after they had gained nine yards on the first two plays. A key fourth down tackle on an attempted sweep put the ball back in Glenn's hands at their own 11. Failing to get a first down, Paul Groves boomed a high punt out of trouble but a 10 yard return made it first and 10 at the Glenn 37 for the Lancers. Once again defense was the name of the game as Freehauf gained a first down on a 12 yard run, but then three straight passes and a confused fourth down play which ended in a loss as the Lancers tried a trick to free a pass receiver on the sidelines resulted in an unsportsmanlike conduct call which, with the play losing three yards, the Falcons refused to take the ball. Twice Groves fell on the ball to kill out the clock and preserve the 12-8 victory. There were no outstanding offensive displays in this game and to single out any defensive man would be hard as it was strictly a team effort on defense after a rather poor showing last week at Fairfield.
