Falcons Use Big play In 33-6 Triumph Friday Hitting like lightning the first three times they touched the ball and using the big play, the John Glenn Falcons jumped safely ahead 20-0 over North Judson in the first period and then, after some domination of the game by the visiting Bluejays, the Falcons came back with two fourth period scores to win their second straight game of the voung season. The final score was 13-6 over the Starke County team. Paul Groves kicked the extra point and with just 13 seconds off the clock it was Glenn 7-0 over the Jays. Paul Groves then kicked off to the visitors and after gaining one first down, they were forced to punt and Tom Moore fielded it with a short return to the Falcon 25. Once again the big play came quickly as John Briggs took the handoff, blasted to the right of center, found some daylight and with a couple of small cuts, he too w as in a foot race that proved to be in his favor as he rambled 75 yards for another quick score. Once again Paul Groves hoot was accurate and it was 14-0 with less than four minutes played. This was happening fast, but North Judson put a drive on after the next kickoff that picked up three first downs along the way and 51 yards until an incomplete pass fell in the end zone on a fourth down that gave the ball to Glenn first and 10 on their own 4 yard line. Once again they called on Briggs and this time, on the same play, he bolted through the line, used some downfield blocks and cuts to almost spring it again, however, he was tackled after gaining 58 yards and a 15 yard piling one penalty against the Jays moved the ball to the North Judson 23. Briggs again got the ball and cracked into the line finding a hole, veered right and raced the remaining yards to pay dirt for Glenn’s third touchdown having only had 3 offensive plays plus the opening kickoff. The try for the point after was wide but

with 2:30 still showing in the first period, it was 20-0. The Bluejays weren’t about to play dead. With a hard hitting workhorse back in John Fornal, plus some passing by Tim Rowe, they again took possession and sustained a drive for some good yardage. Three first downs and 55 yards later, a pass off the fingertips of a Judson player was caught right above the ground by Ed Beasley for a drive ending interception. This time Glenn couldn’t move and punted the ball from their own 13, only to have a John Berg fumble on the punt covered by Mark Izdepski to retain possession for Glenn. It was short lived however as a missed handoff resulted in a fumble and Tim Standifer covered the ball for North Judson. They started this drive from the Falcon 23 and it took just five running plays, four by Fornal, with the final one a one yard plunge, to put the Bluejays on the board. An attempted two point conversion on a pass fell incomplete and with 7:29 left in the half it was 20-6. Once again Judson stopped the Falcons who had gone flat after their early play, and Judson again penetrated deep into Glenn territory only to fumble the ball after a pass completion and Briggs recovered at the Falcon 4 to stop another potential scoring drive. This time they were able to kill the clock deep in their own territory. The second half started more even. An exchange of punts gave the Jays the ball on their own 40 about midway in the third period and once again they kept a drive alive before losing the ball on downs at the Falcon 18. However, on first down, a Briggs fumble was covered by the Jays' Ramon Rodriguez on the Falcon 28. They fell short of a first down and Glenn took over on their own 20. One first down on three rushes, a 14 yard pass for another to Beasley and two cracks into the line made it third and 3 from the NJ 47 when a wide sweep with a pitchout to David Groves sprung the small halfback and once more a foot race was won by Glenn’s back for a touchdown sprint. Paul Groves toe was good once again and with the game now in the fourth period, it was 27-6 Glenn, with this drive actually breaking a lot of Bluejay domination that did everything but score for the visitors. An onside kick by the Falcons was covered by Briggs, but on the first play again, a mix up on the handoff resulted in a fumble with Judson recovering. However, they were unable to move and trailing this much, gambled on fourth down rather than punt, giving Glenn fine field position first and 10 on their own 49. It took seven running plays to get the ball to the nine from where Paul Groves dropped a pass into Jaske’s hands for the final touchdown of the night. The PAT was wide but with just 5:27 left, it was 33-6 and this gave Falcon coach John Hostrawser a chance to

empty his bench, giving all eligible players playing time the rest of the way. Two good individual efforts resulted in this game, John Briggs picking up 196 yards in 13 carries and he also recovered a fumble and an onside kick. John Fornal, the Judson workhorse, carried in all, 28 times, picking up 116 yards, all of them hard yards.
