Shamrocks’ Defense Paces Second Victory The North Liberty Shamrocks rode a solid defense all the way and behind this and the running attack headed by Bob Shipley, ran over River Forest in a rarther loosely played game at Jasckson Field Saturday night. The 22-0 victory for North Liberty raised their record to 2-0 in the early season and they will face their strongest test Friday night as they visit Jimtown for their first conference game. second play from scrimmage, a fumble was covered by Steve Maenhout for the Shamrocks. It took just two running plays for Shipley to find his way into the end zone for the score and he also ran in the extra points to make it 8-0 with 6:32 left in the first quarter. The Shamrocks again went on defense and this time the Ingots put the ball in play from the 35. They did sustain a drive for 13 plays and picked up four first downs on the way before a fourth and 5 situation from the 10 on the first play of the second quarter fell incomplete and the Shamrock defense. after bending a bit, didn't break and gave the ball back to their offense. An exchange of punts after this put the Shamrocks back in possession on their own 40. They moved forward well early in the drive, getting two first downs before turning the ball over on the 26 yard line. Here River Forest met their match as they attempted to set a passing attack in motion only to have quarterback Perry Gamble smeared three straight times and this set up a fourth and 30 from their own six. A bad snap from center on the ground, was finally picked up and an attempt made to punt it which the ball, kicker and everything was covered by the swarming defense and Tim Davis ended up on the ball for a Shamrock touchdown. This time an attempted pass for the extra
points was not good and it was 14-0 with just 2:03 left in the half. No more scoring occured before halftime but the Shamrocks did take the ball away from River Forest twice, once on a fumble recovery by Tim Davis, but they couldn't sustain a drive, so Mike Myers intercepted a first down pass but time ran out without any serious threats being made. The second half had a lot of turnovers and several penalties as play was very loose. About halfway through the third quarter, the Shamrocks took possession on the 41 yard line after a fourth down play by the Ingots was stopped. A 13 play drive, all on the ground, resulted in a score with just 1:49 left in the period as Shipley went the final five yards for the score. An attempted kick for the point after was low and blocked to keep the score at 20-0. The next few minutes had about everything happen. Another interception by the Shamrocks Randy Mathews took the ball away from River Forest, but just two plays later, the Shamrocks fumbled it back on the River Forest 9 yard line. On second down, and the second play of the final period, a fumble by the quarterback Steve Knox, was finally recovered by Knox in the end zone underneath a pile of Shamrock defensive men to count for a safety. This raised the score to 22-0 with 11:17 remaining and the rest of the game found a liberal use of reserves, some more turnovers, penalties (at one point four in a row without a play counting) and the simple running out of time. The Ingots did penetrate Shamrock territory twice in the last period but not seriously, turning the ball over once on downs and the other time on another interception.
