TOUR TO HAWAII Nine people from the South Bend area had a nine day tour to Oahu, Maui and Hawaii August 27 to September 4. The members of the group were Mr. and Mrs. Gus Verkler, Mrs. Ruth Drews, Mr. Linder Williams. Mrs. Evelyn Horrall, Mrs. Vesta DeCoudres. Mrs. Ann Duffy. Mrs. Betty Sebak and Mrs. Leon Babcock. On Oahu we toured Honolulu and had a cruise to Pearl Harbor. Some members had an all day tour around the island. On Monday afternoon and evening we enjoyed a visit to the Polynesian Cultural Center. The show of folk dances telling a story in the evening was delightful. Maui, the Valley Isle, is not so thickly populated. There were many fields of sugar cane and we enjoyed the visit to the Needle in the valley, a very high elevation. One can understand why Charles Linbergh, who seemed to enjoy privacy, chose this island to be his home and the place of his burial. Hawaii is the largest island in the chain of eight. The flag of Hawaii has eight red and white stripes for the eight islands and a Union-Jack in the upper left hand corner. We first visited the Kona Coast area. Some of us took a cruise along the coast in a glass bottomed boat in order to see the marine life and the coral. On the pier as we left they had just brought in a 242 pound marlin. The crew on our boat caught a fish wieghing between 30 to 35 pounds on our return trip. The coast line and ocean is truly beautiful on each of the islands. On Wednesday evening we were guests at a fabulous luau at the Kona Surf Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. Verkler were honored with beautiful flower leis for their many years of married life together. Each guest was presented a shell lei. After our dinner we enjoyed a fine floor show. We had a bus tour around the island to Hilo which was our city of departure. From Hilo we took a bus tour to The Black Sand Beach area, the Valcano and Crater National Park, and visited an orchid and anthurium nursery. On the trip around this island we saw many, many fields of sugar cane and visited the Parker Ranch, which is the second largest ranch in our country. The people of the islands are very friendly and call themselves “the kissing cousins" of the people from the mainland. The beautiful flowers, foliage and ocean scenery will long be remembered.
