photo by Michael Pearish Daily activities to meet the needs of each child development center are planned and coordinated by components responsible for education, social service, health and psychological services, hearing and speech, parent involvement, and nutrition. The program also has coordinators responsible for recruiting volunteer involvement from the community and aiding staff and parents in career development. The health component concerns itself with all existing dental and medical problems and promotes future health through immunizations, screenings, and health edccation of child and parent. Families are encouraged to keep regular appointments with their family physician. Parent participation is sought and enabled throughout the program from the planning aspect to the implementation of the total program. The psychological services com-
ponent facilitates effective intersection among staff, parents, children and volunteers. Speech and hearing evaluations provide the child with followup services where indicated. The social services component links the center, the family, and the related community services and resources. The nutrition component plans for and administers a lunch program for the child, prepared by the public school kitchens and trains program participants in nutritional education. An intense drive to enroll the 600 children required for the program to function this Fall is being made for the first week in July. .Head Start staff is also anxious to locate handicapped four year olds, since the individual approach is especially suited to include children with handicaps in the child development centers. For children who do not live close to a Head Start center, "Home Base" is a service which takes the teacher to the home weekly. All parents who have eligible four year olds (and anyone else knowing of an eligible child) are urged to call the Head Start office at 635 South Main St., South Bend immediately (287-6573). of “the unknown” are two reasons why a child’s first dental appointment can be a very traumatic experience. ♦ ♦♦♦♦ Queen Elizabeth I had such dental problems that it’s reported that she left in the middle of many affairs of state because of severe pain. ♦♦♦ ♦ ♦ Root canal therapy by an endodontist can save teeth that would otherwise have to be removed with up to 95 percent success. Hypersensitive teeth are not necessarily diseased, but are excessively sensitive to hot and cold food, sweets, acids and physical pressure. A special toothpaste called Sensodyne is reported to relieve pain for two out of three patients with tooth hypersensitivity. Pain relief builds up with continued use. »»»»» Dental plaque, rather than hormones, precipitates the cause of gum diseases in pregnant women, according to a researcher at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry.
