Fourth Os July Activities At North Liberty The Fourth of July activities at North Liberty will begin at 4:00 p.m. with the crowning of the queen followed by the judging of beards and Bicentennial dress. A vesper service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Fireworks will be held at dark. July 5 a parade will be held beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Main Street followed by family activities and entertainment at the park. Carnival rides, concession booths, food, contests and other activities are planned. Free Swimming Lessons At Koontz Lake Free swimming lessons are being conducted by the Koontz Lake Lions Club, funded by Oregon Township. Starke County Revenue Sharing at the Marshall residence. Circle Avenue at Locust, Kixmtz Lake. The American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor is Jennifer Marshall Gaddis. All levels of Red Cross Swimming insturction will be offered including Advanced Lifesaving. Minimum age is seven years. Registration for the first session. July 5 thru July 16. is July 3. Registration for the second session. July 19 thru July 30. is July 17. Plane Crash At North Liberty Kills Pilot A 1949 Commonwealth Sky Ranger, made mostly of w<xxi and a canvas type materia), piloted by Robert M. Jones, 50. of 17683 Ceveland Road. South Bend, crashed about 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 26. in a wooded area on the Robert Dudeck farm which is a mile north of North Liberty. The craft had taken off from the Morris Lambert property and was going to Niles, Michigan. Jones was pronounced dead at the scene by deputy coroner Louis Grwinski. He died of severe chest injuries and multiple fractures. KIDDIES DAY RIDES SATURDAY The Kiddies Day at the carnival in Place Park. Walkerton, will have reduced rates for the rides on Saturday. July 3. in the afternoon. Also a prize will be awarded. The Fourth of July committee states that the fire works this year will be bigger and better than ever on Sunday evening. The rain date is Monday. July 5. The Walkerton Chamber of C ommerce. Walkerton Lions ( lub. American Legion Post 189 and the Walkerton Jaycees will man the food booth at the Park on July 4. Also listed elsewhere in the paper arc the many Bicentennial events happening over the next four days. NOTICE The Walkerton License Bureau will be closed on Saturday. July 3 and on Monday. July 5.

On Thursday. Friday and Saturday. June 24. 25 and 26. at 8:00 p.m. each evening the John Glenn High School Thespian Society will be doing their presentation of Thorton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize winning play, "The Skin Os Our Teeth," for the Bicentennial. The play is a brilliant burlesque on civilization. Throughout the play one world keeps challenging the other. Everything in the play is seen in duality art and materialistic living, marriage and adultery, the incredibly great progress of man and the pitifully small amount of lessons we have learned. The members of the cast include Clyde Gaw, Janis McGee, David Reed. Jill "Northam and Diane Shaffer. The set is designed by John Thomas, art teacher, and the Art Club at the high school and the lighting will be done by Tim Jackson. Sunday, June 27. at 7:00 p.m. the Bicentennial Religious Community Service will be held at the John Glenn stadium, Walkerton. The Color Guard from the Walkerton American Legion Post 189 will be present. Organist will be Mrs. Robert Ross. The invocation and call to worship will be given by Rev. Robert C. Bowman. Religious Coordinator of the Greater Walkerton Area Bicentennial Committee. A portion of "I Love America." under the direction of Mrs. Sharon Klinedinst will be presented. Following will be "Ears To Hear," voices of the past by Rev. William Hughes, Father Anthony Letko, Rev. Lloyd George, John Zenon and Mrs. Arthur Schmeltz. The message entitled, "The Role Os Religion In America,” will be delivered by Rev. Dr. Robert Ross. The hymn, “My Country ’tis of Thee," will follow and then the benediction. Next on the agenda is the Four Day Activities for all ages. The first day is Thursday. July 1 and this is Youth Day under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. Craig Reed. The day will begin with the Kiddies Parade at 12 noon with line up at 11:30 a m. on Jackson Street between Illinois and Michigan Streets. The parade will follow this route from Illinois to Van Buren to Ohio down to Park Drive to Place Park. Theme of the parade is "American Folk Lore." Three catagories are realistic, fictional and patriotic. Judging will be held with prizes and ribbons given. At 1:00 p.m. the Official Opening Ceremony will be held on the steps of Urey Middle School with a ribbon cutting ceremony and a balloon release. From 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. are Kiddies Games and Contests with prizes at Place Park. There are five age groups and they are 2-4 years old; 5-7 years old; 8-10 years old; 11-13 years old and 14-17 years old At 7:30 p.m. the Crowning Ceremony of the Bicentennial royalty will be held at the basketball court of Place Park with the crowning of Miss and Master Bicentennial (3-7 years old); Prince and Princess (8-12 years old) and King and Queen (13-18 years old) with the contestants names drawn out of a hat. For Walkerton patients at the Walkerton Nursing Home and the flowers are donated by The Posy Parlor, Walkerton. To finish out Youth Day there will be a dance from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. at the park. Friday, July 2. is Pioneer Day under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. James Reed. The day will begin at 12 noon until 3:00 p.m. with games and events at Place Park. From 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. are Lumber "Jack’s" Pioneer Games, also at the park, with match splitting, log roll, tobacco spit, cross cutting, etc. under the direction of Jack Wardman. At 6:30 to 7:30 p.m: on the steps of Urey Middle School the style show of "Fashions of Yesteryear." will be held under the sponsorship of the St. Patrick's Women’s Club. From 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. there will be a Muzzle Loading Exhibition done by members of the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association in Place Park. The Square Dancing Exhibition will be held at 9:00 p.m. at the basketball court in Place Park by the Dixie Walkers Square Dance Club. Also the crowning of the Pioneer King and Queen will be held at this time prior to the exhibition. Saturday, July 3. is Parade Day under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. James Patterson. Line up is at 6:00 p.m. The parade will begin at 7:00 p.m. leaving John Glenn High School and traveling up Georgia Street to Van Buren and on to Urey Middle Schoo! area. The judges stand will be at the corner of Illinois and Van Buren Street. The Valleyaires will be singing prior to the parade and they will have a program in the downtown area following the parade. Sunday, July 4 is Religious and Patriotic Day under the chairmanship of Mrs. A. G. Hunt. The Ringing of the Bells will be held at Place Park at 1:00 p.m. At 7:00 p.m. is the program. "For God and Country." at the park with guest speaker. Dr. Robert Ross. Vocalist will be Mrs. Gene Gerber and the John Glenn High School Band will also hold a short concert. The retreat of the colors will be done by the American Legion Post 189. The giant fireworks display will close out the activities which have been planned by a committee under the direction of Mrs. Robert Wardman. Valleyaires To Perform Here Saturday The St. Joseph County Valleyaires Barbershop Chorus will be singing on the Chamber of Commerce float in the parade in Walkerton on Saturday, July 3. From 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. there will be quartets on the streets uptown singing for your pleasure. Also the Valleyaires will hold a concert following the parade from 8:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Farmers State Bank of Wyatt-Walkerton parking lot.
Parade Has Over 90 Entries The 3rd of July Parade in Walkerton boosts of over 90 entries with seven bands, Ronald McDonald and Hamburgler will be on hand to add to the festivities. Also included in the entries are clowns, marching units, horse groups, antique cars and numerous floats with over 1.000 participating. The line up for the big parade is at 6:00 p.m. at John Glenn High School and the parade will begin at 7:00 p.m. sharp and will last for about an hour and a half. The parade will commence up Georgia Street to Van Buren Street; Van Buren to Urey Middle School. These streets will have no parking signs up at 4:00 p.m. Please remove cars before 6:00 p.m. All side streets will be blocked at the alleys and only single line parking will be allowed on these streets; do not block streets even though bkxked off, according to the state fire code. Courtesy and antique cars as well as horse units will turn at Ohio Street and travel to Adams Street where they will continue to Virginia Street. Cars will go to the elementary school for disposal and horses will travel on back to John Glenn High School for reloading. The bands will line up on the east-west streets off of Georgia Street and we ask the residents to please extend the courtesy of the band members for one hour. An additional highlight will be the Valleyaires which will be stationed along the route in small groups singing and they will then have a concert following. Trophies will be awarded half an hour after the parade at the judges’ stand which will be at the intersection of Illinois and Van Buren Streets. Judges include Jon Dunning, former band director; John Thomas, art teacher; Don Schwing, former band director; Bud Ricks, Bob Erdelyi and John McGovern. The committee headed by Mr. and Mrs. James Patterson wishes to extend in advance thanks to all for helping in making this a "parade of all parades." NOTICE The Office of the Clerk-Treasurer of the Town of Walkerton will be closed on Saturdays in July. August and September. Office hours are from 8:(X) a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday. The office will also be closed on Monday. July 5. FLUSHING OF HYDRANTS JULY 1 AND 2 Due to the heavy rain last week, the flushing of hydrants in North Liberty will be this Thursday and Friday. July I and 2. ICE CREAM SOCIAL For the Bicentennial an old sash ioned Ice Cream Social will be held on July 2 beginning at 5:00 p.m at the Church of the Brethren, corner of Lafayette and Market, in North Liberty. North Liberty July 4 Religious Heritage Service The Ministerial Assixiation of North Liberty will conduct a religious service in keeping with the heritage of the Bicentennial observance. Churches involved in this historical event to be held in the North Liberty park at 6:00 p.m.. Sunday. July 4. are the Brethren Church of North Liberty, the North Liberty Church of the Brethren. North Liberty United Methodist. Tabor and Maple Grove United Methodist Churches. Sumption Prairie and Salem Chapel United Methodist Churches. Beaver ( reek Wesleyan Church. Ihe public is invited to join in the religious observance which promises to offer some surprises. Fashions Os Yesteryear Friday Night Fashions of Yesteryear will be presented during Pioneer Dav. July 2, when a delightful pageant of fashions beginning with Martha Washington to the present time shown on the steps of the Urey Middle School at 6:30 p.m. Chair men of the event sponsored by the St. Patrick Women's Club are Mrs. Robert Legge. Mrs. John Cowger and Mrs. Harry Malstaff. Mrs. Michael Kochnowski will be the narrator with authentic background music from the l"0()’s and l8(X)'s by Ralph Page and his orchestra and as compiled by Dr and Mrs. Adolph Weinstock, Rolling Prairie, a couple noted for their interest in historv of ethnic folk dances.
