WALKERTON TOWN BOARD NEWS The Board of Trustees of the [own of Walkerton met at 7:30 p.m. Monday. June 6. with William I Elkin, Gladys Prentis, Jack D. [ iede and O. C . White. After calling the meeting to order, president I Ikm asked tor the reading of the minutes of the meeting held May 1" and the special meeting held Mav 24. On a motion by White, seconded by Tiede and carried, the minutes were approved as read. Bob Schreiber and Ginny Conrad. Burroughs Corporation, were present to explain labor, mileage and parts costs connected with maintenance of the Mini-Computer and also to explain how a maintenance agreement for the machine would be handled. The board will give futher consideration before deciding if the maintenance agreement should be used. Amv Wardman and Linda Bridwell. American Legion Auxiliary Patriotism Committee, read a proclamation for Elag Day. and asked that it be signed bv the president of the board. Unanimous consent was given that it be signed and published in "The IndependentNews." Gene Clifton, 1317-A Ohio St. requested the board’s assistance in obtaining peace and quiet at his residence. He claimed that his family is being harrassed and his propertv vandalized. The Police w ill be questioned to learn details. As Clifton is willing to sign a complaint. an attempt will be made to have the matter taken to court. Police chief Clifford Ward and St. Joseph County Civil Defense Director Don Germann gave information about organization of an auxiliary police force. Such group would be used to augment the police department. The members would be given weapons training, instruction in traffic control and writing reports, first aid. etc. They would be furnished a uniform. All work would be voluntary. Persons desiring to be considered as members of this group should contact chief Ward. Howard Kimbrell and Ken Brasseur. Clyde E. Williams Associates, explained the plan of study and applications for funds for the first of three phases as now required for federal funding of a complete sewage system. Much more detail and time are required with federal guidlines in effect now. than were needed before. Paperwork will be reviewed by members of the board and town attorney before signature is made.

A note was made that the completion of the project cannot be anticipated earlier than three years hence. The report of police activities for the month of May was received and on a motion by Prentis, seconded bv White and carried, it was accepted. An organization using the Walkerton Community Building has requested permission to purchase and donate chairs for use in the building. The board is happy to accept the gift on the condition that the town is not held accountable if damage is done to the chairs or one or more might be lost or stolen. (Jail Malstaff, Park Department, told that the horseshoe pits at the corner of Admas and Michigan Streets are being renovated by the Jaycees and will soon be ready for use. He said that shuffleboard courts are planned in the same area. He acknowledged that the tennis courts are in need of reapir but said that the department hopes to finance the repairs with a grant. He requested that a light be placed in Place Park shining on the steps at the base of the Urey School flagpole to light a pageant to be presented during celebration week. Malstaff also announced that the Park Department will be in a meeting with Snell Engineering Thursday evening to prepare a budget and make plans. Charles Roth. Street Superintendent. suggested that residents be asked to put forth extra effort to cut weeds as there are several locations where weeds are much too high. He told that the Norfolk & Western Railroad tracks are grown up with weeds and was directed to contact the track foreman to request these be mowed. He has been trying to contact the owner of a lot in the 1000 block of Harrison Street to have the lot cleared. Roth requested that the streets in Glenn-L Estates be paved 24 foot wide with a three foot gravel berm on each side. This request has the approval of the board on the condition that there are adequate funds available to complete the project. He stated that the engineering firm for the Bicrly Street project has not completed their work at this date. Police officer Snyder made a request that substantial pay increases be allowed the department in the upcoming year. He learned that increases are being considered but was given no assurances of an amount. James Lewis. Granger, applied for work on the police department. He has considerable experience in police work and would be qualified for the job. He was told that any additional police personnel must be approved and financed by CF.TA.
He will apply to that agency. In response to a letter from an inspector for insurance, the board authorized that town employees build a wall or guardrail around the boiler and that a plumber be hired to place a relief valve on the electric water heater. This work is to be done in the municipal building. Approval was given for the proposed usage of Federal Revenue Funds to be received during the last six months of 1976. The ClerkTreasurer will place legal advertisment as required to show planned usage. The Order of Eastern Star requested and was given permission to operate a f<x>d concession booth on the sidewalk close to the Post Office on Saturday. July 3rd. Claims 320 thru 363 except 351 and 352 were approved and authorized for payment. Members of the board were reminded of the special meeting called for Monday. June 14 to meet with the Township Trustees to again attempt to write a fire-pro-tection contract. Approval of additional appropriations was received. Larrv Stull pitched all seven innings for Glenn in the losing effort. Jeff Stratford hit a triple, driving in one run. The Falcons scored in the third and in the sixth innings Argos scored three times in the first inning and twice in the second Rinard was the winning pitcher for Argos. Glenn is now 0-1 and they will play Culver on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at Glenn.
