How Housing Allowance Program Works ThcHousing Allowance Program is not tor everyone in our community. Simply, everybody in our town cannot afford truly adequate housing. if you are an older adult you may feel the pinch of fixed income or pension and if you are younger and able to work you may not be able to find a good job. no matter how hard you try, you just can’t seem to earn enough money to pay for decent housing. This is an experimental program that might solve the problem. The Walkerton community and a few others across the country are taking part in the Housing Allowance Program that is funded by the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The program aims to try out a new way of helping low and moderate income people obtain housing that is decent, safe and sanitary. HUD provides funds for the program through a contract with the South Bend Housing Authority, the Housing Allowance Office. Inc., oper ates the program on behalf of the Housing Authority. The Rand Corporation, a non profit research organization, was selected by HUD to design the program and to study its operation for the first five years. Does you household fall in this program? Qualifications are as follows: A. Two or more related or married persons living together. Unrelated persons count as house hold members as long as they are living with the household and are dependent on it for support. B. One person, living alone. Aho is 62 years of age or older. C. One person, living alone, who is 18 years of age or older and Aho is disabled or handicapped. D. One person, living alone. Aho is 18 years of age or older and Aho has been forced to move because of a federally-proclaimed natural disaster, urban renewal or other action by the city, county or federal government.
