On Friday. April 9. Mr. Brown’s first period seventh grade class at Urey Middle School, planted a tulip tree in commemoration of Arbor School Day and the American Bicentennial. The tree uas a gift from Gov. Otis Bowen, being sent through the State Forestry Department, to the whole community. The tulip tree is Indiana's state tree. last week and brings the total number of miles to be resurfaced this season to 478, reports Commission Chairman Richard A. Boehning. Total cost of the resurfacing program this year will be about sls million, he added. The Commission’s annual resurfacing program is divided into three phases and the first two of those had received approval earlier this year with contracts already having been let for those projects. Phase 111. now given the go-ahead, will include 43 projects with some work scheduled in each of the Highway’s six District areas. This final phase will include nearly 198 miles of resurfacing at a cost of $5,713,800. Contracts for Phase 111 projects are expected to be advertised in the May 18 lilting. Phase 111 is attached. A project on the roads may include any one or more of the following: resurfacing, widening, reconstruction of shoulders, wedging and leveling. Not all projects are limited to only resurfacing. For example, one project may be resurfacing and widening, another may be resurfacing and shoulder repair, and yet another leveling only.
