Pilot Program Adopted By P-L-J Schools A pilot program has been recently adopted by the Polk-Lincoln-johnson School Corporation in Walkerton that is intended to fulfill the need described in recent articles in the South Bend Tribune written by Dr. Burton L. White, of Harvard University. The philosophy of Project Home Base is consistent with the author's statement that most parents are not able to do the job of parenting by instinct or intuition alone. Project Home Base is a federally sponsored program aimed at helping parents prepare their children during their pre-school years. Many studies have been done in recent years resulting in research that indicates that children's progress can be improved with certain environments. For this reason we have been very interested in a program of this philosophy to prepare students for success in their school years. The basis of this project is that the parent is the child’s best teacher. The parent is the model for the child to follow and develop but often parents are not sure howto help children reach their greatest potential. A great percentage of a child's potential is reached by the time the child is 3*/j to 4 years old.

In this program the parent is taught tasks which are designed to be intellectually stimulating that the parent can teach to his child. A parent-educator who visits the home weekly assists the parent in the proper method of teaching these tasks to the child. Ihe statistics of this program that has been conducted in Yakima. Washington. for the past four years, has shown evidence that the children enrolled in the program, ages 8 months to 4 years of age. have con tinued to be a year ahead of their peers who have not had this training. An inventory of the community is being conducted at this time in the Walkerton School district to assess the needs of the community in adopting this program. We are hoping that the program will be of assistance to the parents of the community as they help prepare their children to become independent. useful, productive citizens. The program is being projected to begin in the fal of 1976. Interested educators and patrons of the community are invited to attend a workshop April 21 where the program will be explained in detail by Mrs. Judy Popp, the demon-startor-coordinator of the program in Yakima. Washington. The workshop will be held at Walkerton Elementary School, 806 Washington Street, from 9:00 - 11:30 a.m. If you arc interested in coming, please call Walkerton Elementary School. 586-3186. for reservations!
