In celebration of Arbor Day, F.F.A. members Mike Stahly, Roger. Cowen and Sam Haag planted a tulip tree on the John Glenn High School lawn as H. R. Muncie, superintendent; Alvin Boise, principal; and Leon Verhaeghe. Vo-Ag instructor, watch. The tulip tree. Indiana's State Tree, was supplied by the Indiana Division of Forestry and was requested by Mike Stahly. F.F.A. president. The trees were supplied to any school on request. Governor Otis Bowen proclaimed April 9. the second Friday in April, as Arbor Day for the appreciation and planting of trees. WALKERTON TOWN BOARD NEWS The Walkerton Town Board met in regular session on Monday, April 5. with William Elkin. Gladys Prentis, Michael W. Corbett and Jack D. Tiede. present. The meeting was called to order by president Elkin. The minutes of the meeting of March 15 were read and approved. O. H. Fry requested information about the Housing Allowance Program. He was informed that personnel from HUD will be at the Chamber of Commerce meeting Thursday, April 8. Board members have been invited to that meeting and will be able to learn about the program there. Representatives from the Civil Defense Weatherwatch asked that the board assist with the organization of a tornado watch. The board concurred that this would be a worthwhile endeavor and agreed to support the organization. A film will be scheduled in the near future about tornadoes It will be for public viewing and will be well publicized. Park board president. Gail Mal staff, with his staff, suggested that members of the board as well as any resident should plan to attend a meeting Wednesday, April 28. at the Community Building. Person nel from Notre Dame who made a detailed study of the Town of Walkerton will show their results and conclusions about our tow n, and its comparison to other small towns. The park board made known the need for bleachers and additional lighting for the parks as well as ball diamond maintenance. They asked that they be authorized to spend the money that has been provided for in the budget. No funds can be
made available until receipt of property tax distributions. They also requested guidance about time involved and costs for maintenance of park facilities. Mr. and Mrs. Harlozinaki, 407 Georgia Street, requested that the board open the alley beside their property east from Georgia St. Board directed them to determine property boundaries by survey before any work can be done by the town. C. H. Roth, street superintendent, said the 1967 International truck has been returned but there are still some problems with it. He asked that it be given more attention. Mr. Roth suggested that the town apply for CETA funds to hire additional personnel for the summer months. This procedure has been used during the past two years and will be applied for again this year. He asked authorization to proceed with the replacement of guard rails at the approaches to the Harrison St. bridge. He was directed to work with Street Commissioner Tiede to the conclusion of this project. After discussion and on a motion approaved it was ordained to establish an inspection fee for sewer taps in the amount of $25.00. effectively immediately. Marvin Williams, Utilities Superintendent. advised the board of requirements for the establishment of the new distribution point to soon be installed, and for heavier voltage installations to be installed at some customers places of business. He reporoted to the board about the PSCI hearing held last Wednesday and about the IMEA meeting attended in March. Mr. Williams also discussed the problem of tampering with metering equipment by utility customers and asked for guidance concerning the problem. On a motion allowed it was ordained that there be a Meter Tampering Charge of $25.00 to be assessed before service will be reinstated where the towns metering equipment has been tampered with. Fire chief Charles Lloyd asked the board what decision had been reached about repair or replacement of the big siren on the municipal building and asked that it be fixed immediately. was present to finalize the agreement needed so that his company may proceed with studies and grant applications toward the building of new sewage facilities. He is authorized to make applications as quickly as possible. The program is laid out in three steps as required by current EPA regulations. The police department report for the month of March was received and accepted as submitted, The Clerk-Treasurer was instructed to publish monthly reports in the local newspaper. After taking care of correspondence the board reviewed claims 167-223 which were read and with the exception of two claims were approved. The two claims were held for review before payment. Chamber News Charles F. Lennon, Jr., director of the experimental Housing Allowance Program, will discuss "The Housing Allowance Program: What it is and How it Works" with members of the Walkerton Chamber of Commerce Thursday, April 8. The noon meeting will be held at Heil's Restaurant. Walkerton, and all Chamber members are encouraged to attend. During the brief program, Lennon will offer program information and answer questions concerning the Housing Allowance Program and its potential benefits to Walkerton residents. Mr. Lennon is Director of the Housing Allowance Office. Inc., South Bend, Indiana. He is president of the Housing Allowance Office. Inc., the non-profit corporation which operates the allowance program in South Bend. Mr. Lennon has a B.A. in biology and education from the University of Notre Dame and received an M.A. in guidance and counseling from the University. Mr. Lennon was the Executive Director of the Departments of Community Development and Redevelopment and the Model Cities Program for the City of South Bend. Prior to his work with the city. Mr. Lennon was the Executive Director of the Mental Health Association of St. Joseph County. Coordinator of Research and Sponsored Programs for the University of Notre Dame and the assistant coach of the baseball and basketball teams for the University. Lennon is a member of the Executive Board of the National Model Cities-Community Directors' Association and, through his position, is Chairperson of the Citizen participation Committee. He is a member of the National Notre Dame Monogram Gub, immediate Past President of the East Side Little League and a past member of the Potawatomi Kiwannis Gub. Mr. Lennon is married and the father of five children. The family are members of the Little Flower Parish where the Lennon’s arc the immediate Past President Couple of the Parish Council.
