Ochs CORN ROOTWORM BEETLES ATTACK Heavy and sometimes damaging population of corn rootworm beetles are feeding on corn silks as pictured in the July 24 issue of the Independent in the northern third of Indiana, reports David L. Matthew. Purdue University extension entomologist.
Sometimes called "silk beetles," they are the adult form of the northern, western and southern corn rootworms. The western species is found in the northern half of Indiana and the other two throughout the state. Beetle feeding on corn silks before pollination is completed may result in barren or poorly filled ears and reduced yields. Research shows that an average of five beetles per plant may cause economic damage. However, since plant developemcnt this summer varies widely within fields, there may be a few fields where an average of three beetles may mean trouble, the entomologist says. The important factor, he adds, is the corn development stage. Matthew says all corn fields, and particularly those in the northern half of the state, containing plants that are beginning to silk should be examined to determine the need for control. He advises control if beetle counts average five or more per plant and the beetles are cutting off sliks before pollination. If control is required, apply one of the following at the listed rate per acre: Sevin 80 per cent Sprayable at one and one fourth pounds; Malathion 57 per cent Emulsifiable Concentrate at one-fi fth gallon; Malathion Ultra Low Volume at four ounces, or Dianzinon AG 500 at one pint. Follow label instructions for precautions, warnings or harvest restrictions. However, do not spray for beetle control in fields where plants have already been pollinated, Matthew cautions. NIPSO NATURAL GAS PRICES TO CHANGE "Changes in the cost of gas to suppliers effective August 1, 1975, will be reflected in customer rates upon approval of the Public Service Commission of Indiana,” Dean H. Mitchell, NIPSCO chairman and chief executive officer, said today. The change in customer rates is the result of the composite effect of the expiration of the temporary increases authorized by the Federal Power Commission earlier this year and the imposition of purchased gas adjustments from the company’s five (5) gas pipeline suppliers. NIPSCO today filed a petition with the Public Service Commission of Indiana requesting a downward revision in its gas rate schedule which reflects the net effect of the changes in the cost of purchased gas to the utility. "If the new rate schedule is approved,” said the utlility chief executive, "the average residential customer using gas for home heating and other household purposes will be paying approximately $1.93 per year or 16 cents per month less for gas service than he would have been paying under rates now in effect. "NIPSCO residential coustomers using gas for household purposes other than home heating will pay approximately 44 cents per year or 3-2/3 cents per month less for this service under the new schedule," Mitchell said. The action of the utility is in accordance with an order of the Public Service Commission of Indiana, issued December 11, 1970. authorizing gas distribution companies in Indiana to request an increase or decrease in the cost of ‘ gas to customers whenever gas supply costs to the utility have gone up or down as a result of action taken by the Federal Power Com misson. The effectiveness of the new rate schedule is subject to the approval of the Public Service Commission of Indiana.
