The select dishes of each member provided an unequaled gourmet smorgasbord. The guest tables were bright with a, rangements of yellow jonquils and white daisies. Mrs. John McComb* gave the invocation. Mrs. Leonard Beaty, president. greeted the group mention.ng the day was doubly significant for her since it was also her husband’s birthday. Mrs. Roy Hostetter, her sister. presented Mr. Beaty with a special birthday cake. The cake was then added to the festive board. Before the trip was i ompleted their speedometer was to registei a total of 12,000 miles. As the caravan moved out it was agreed to travel approximately 250 miles a day from base to base While based in cities such as Queretaro, Mexico City, Patzcuaro. Guadalajara, Puerto Vallar. ta Mazatlan, Los Mochas and San Carlos, members of the caravan took guided bus tours to differ, ent places every day. The great, est number of days were devoted to Mexico City. The caravan came back into the United States at Nogales, Arizona. There are nearly nine million people in Mexico C.ty, Many of the peeph come from surrounding farms, md the arid country to the north, in the hope of finding j Ts. They are not educated and most find no work and no place to live. When they tin find abodes they are generally shacks in slum areas. At one place we saw rope being made by hand from cactus. They are a pleasant, hap-py-go-lucky people; they are friendly and kind to tourists. Mexica seethes with atmosphere. history; Mexico City is a teeming metropolis, urban redevel< pment goes on, the standard of living improves. Some housing in Mexico is indescribably beautiful It is a long time from the period of the Aztecs when the air was pure and clean to modem Mexico which Ls plagued at times with pollution just as other countries.
