ment experienced by the threeman Skylab crews as they conduct experiments in orbit some 270 miles above the earth’s surface. Skylab, largest assembly to date in America’s space program, has crew living quarters and laboratory space with equipment used in medical experiments, studies of the sun and studies of the earth's re•ources. The space station, where the second and third crews spend as much as 56 days, has been ■aid to have many of the characteristics and equipment of an airliner, a hole!, a medical laboratory, a solar Observatory ■nd a sctanUfic laboratory. Officials of taw Mar»hall Space Flight Center — where space exploratioa had iU beginnings — consider the new Skylab addition one of the moat Interesting for visitors, because it can be seen while the entire world follows news ' of the actual operations of the space station high tn the sky. Fuel Conservation Starts In The Home
The heating and cooling of buildings requires about one sixth of the total energy expended in the United States. Much of this energy is wasted because buildings are so poorly insulated that heat is lost in winter and air conditioning equipment runs overtime in summer. This applies to most older homes and commercial buildings, and surprisingly, occurs in many new structures as well, the researchers find. Wasted energy may Cost the nation ns much as two billion dollars nnnunlly. Insulation specialists at the Construction Products Division of WR. Grace & Co., Cambridge, Massachusetts — one of the nation’s largest producers of insulating materials—|»oint out that such things as better home insulation, storm windows and more efficient heating and cooling units can greatly reduce fuel costa Savings can amount to over SIOO a year in the average size home. It is estimated 50% of homes 15 years old or older have no insulation at all and nearly all homes are inadequately insulated by today's standards. As with almost everything else, fuel costs for the consumer have been rising and are expected to continue in the future. Fuel economists predict that the price for gas, electricity and heating oil will increase at an annual average rate of about eight per cent. At this rate, fuel prices will double in ten years. Here are acme recommendations from the W R Grace •peciaHsts on how consumers can lower fuel and air conditioning costs and nt the Mme time do their bit to cut down on air pollution. • Use weather stripping, wherever necessary. • Make sure your house is
