the front and both ends of the rack, forming a back drop for the performance, while also providing hanger space behind the curtain for the puppets before and after their use. The thirty inch by thirty inch stage is the top of one traveling case with truss bars in the case, giving it added strength. Three sides of the stage are covered also with a black matching curtain. In the four corners are slots for one of two sets of legs. Choice of height of the set of legs is determined by the amount of head room the operator has in a given room. A small metal step ladder is securely inserted and locked on each side of the stage so that Nola in a formal can gracefully ascend on or leave the stage. During the performance either Nola or Bruce, always in full dress, is in full view of the audience with a puppet. The tape recorder is an important part of the act. A transition of a change of puppet is cued on the music tape allowing seven seconds to make the change and return to the stage. Their music is constantly updated along with their costumes and hairdos. Lighting as in other theaters is important. Black light paint used on the skeleton puppet, will show bluish without a spot light. The South American dancers are dressed in a black light fabric that glows in the dark when the special light is used.

Puppets are very seldom stolen. There is no market for them. Each puppeteer recognizes the various styles of puppets that belong to someone else’s act. The organization being close knit in cases of this kind would advise all members of the theft of any puppet from any member. The variety show given by Bruce and Nola pleases the ages from kindergarten through grade twelve. However, nine out of every ten shows are for adults. The Bucknells, from Cedar Rapids, lowa, have performed in about every state in the Union, and also in Canada. Their variety show has been popular for conventions. They have performed twenty-two consecutive years for a particular church, for River Boat Days at Clinton, lowa, for eight years, and for the All lowa Fair for four consecutive years. Mr. Bucknell was honored by being the recipient of the wood carving tools used by Pinxie Larson, who at the request of Edgar Bergen, carved the original Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. Pinxie and Madame Larson were Hie top Punch and Judy showmen in the United States for many years. When asked what the future holds for puppetry Bruce said, “It will go on. It has existed for ages. It will never be a lost art because it is the oldest form of the theatre.”
