Falcons Top Knox For First Win Os Year John Glenn’s Falcons tasted the sweetness of victory Friday night for the first time in over two years as they won an exciting 14-12 decision over the Knox Redskins. After a scoreless first half, a pass interception returned for a touchdown broke the ice and three more scores were recorded in the final quarter in the exciting climax. Knox had an opportunity to tie the score with 19 seconds left but a big five yard delay of game penalty pushed the extra point try back and they fell well short on a run trying for the two pointer. Glenn had moved to decent field position with the aid of a Knox 15 yard roughing call only to turn the ball over on downs at the Knox 38. After a first down had been gained by Knox, they were forced to punt and a short kick gave Glenn the ball on their own 35. A first down on three running plays was followed by a Knox roughing penalty again and the Falcons found themselves first and 10 on the Knox 29. Fred Casteel hit for three, but a fumble followed by Gordon Hartsell that gave Knox the bail on their own 10. They moved out with two first downs before being forced to punt On the first play of the sec-

ond quarter, Rick Warren inter- I ccpted a Tommy Hall pass and a nine yard return and a 15 yard face mgsk call gave Knox an excellent field position with a first and 10 at the Glenn 31. Walt ' Bridegroom ripped off 16 yards and alter four more running attempts they had first and goal at the 5 yard line. The Falcon defense was equal to the occasion and on fourth down Bridegroom missed on a 23 yard field goal attempt. Knox kept the pressure on after a Falcon punt and had a first and goal from the 9 again, but । were hurt by a big 15 yard hold- , ing call and Glenn eventually got out of the half with the game tned at 0-0. The real fun started in the second half. Gordon Hartsell interi cepted a Konx pass and returned । it 21 yards to the Glenn 46 early in the action. Fred Casteel then paced a lunning attack that got i two first downs and some precious real estate until a fourth and 9 ! situation found John Verkier trying a 46 yard field goal. The attempt was w’ay short but bet- • ter than a punt as the ball was I downed on the four. Knox failed to get a first down and punted I and Glenn got excellent position again. A proceedure call took away a first down on their fourth down play so Verkier tried another from 48 yards away. The same result, Knox got the ball , deep in very poor position. i Two Glenn 15 yarders and a five yarder moved Knox to two first I downs but the Redskins got 15 of their own for a personal foul setting up a 2 and 24 situation i that found Hartsell intercepting a Warren pass and returning it on a beautiful piece of running with some key blocks, for 55 yards and a touchdown. Verkier 1 booted the extra point and Glenn was on top 7-0 with 1:46 left in I the third period. A fired up Falcon team then i tried an onside kick and Bob Wilson covered the ball on the 33 Knox had fumbled the ball. Casteel then hit for 17 and 5. lost
one but a Knox off side and four more by Casteel made it first and goal from the 5. It took Casteel just one play, the first play of the final quarter, to crash into the end zone. Verkier again kicked the point after and it was 14-0 with just under a quarter to play. After Knox had failed to pick up a first down, they punted to the Falcons whose main concern now was time. Glenn got a big break when a roughing the kicker call gave them a much needed first down, but a fumble was recovered by Bruce Hagen and the Redskins started a 12 play drive that covered 45 yards with Bridegroom diving in from the one for the score. A pass for two points w’as complete but mled dead on the one so Glenn maintained the eight point lead with 4:27 left to Play. An onside kick attempt failed and Glenn had fine field position on their own SO. Casteel's running got one first down but the Falcons turned the ball over on downs with around a minute left. On a third and 18, a screen pass to Walt Bridegroom picked up 65 to the Falcon 6 where Hartsell overtook him. However, it took just one more play for Metz to hit Hagen with the short pass that made it 14-12. Being out of time outs, Metz went to the sidelines fcr play selection and Knox didn’t get the play off in time, costing them a big five yards and enabling the Falcon defense stop th? running play that had been selected. An onside kick was covered by Harvey Elkin and time lan out before another play was started, thus making one of the haj\est groups of boys seen in a long time. The defense deserves a lot of credit in this win. They stopped a couple of Knox drives early that were very important along with Hartsell's two interceptions, one for the TD. Casteel's offensive effort was great as he picked up 120 yards in 27 carries despite being about Glenn's only running threat. He also caught Glenn's only pass early in the game. It
