'IIETTERS M TO THE- 'S?' I I To Whom It Maj Coniern— Well another moving of being awakened at 9:00 a.m. by early morning working trafisc coming off. 23 onto little ole Jefferson Street, full of holes, puddles, etc. Some oars stopping at the 4-way stop at Illinois and Jefferson Streets, others ignoring it. We thought when our road was sut veyad and marked our little ole stieet would be in for a new facelifting - but low and behold it wasn’t. Only a few holes refilled again as of the past 20 years. Our alley was a no-no too. We have a dirty ole muddy alley, no stones or gravel. It is used more than the nne next to us that is black topped. Why were some alleys already black topped, re-done, and ours left out completely? « Also why are all the big semiti ticks and other trucks using our street, as a by-pass, when they aren’t supposed to be allowed on it. With all the water on the st’eet it sounds like motor boats going through the water. Oh yes, thanks to Louis Houser for opening up the view on to 23. A big improvement for all the traffic on little ole Jefferson Street. Think the 4-way stop and speed should be checked on the street too — especially With all the children traffic on the road now sinbe-school has started and there is mo sidewalk for the chiklren to u»e cither. Six Ches Reveal A Heat Thief In Your Attic

Is there a heat thief hiding in your attic? Inadequate attic insulation can actually be robbing you of up to 40 per cent of your annual home heating budget. That’s a lot of stolen dollars. But fortunately thete’s something you can do about it First step, according to insulation exj>erts of the W. R. Grace & Co. Construction Products Division, is a quick inspection of >our entire attic. The experts identify six danger signals, any one of which will tell you-that your present insulation is sadly inadequate for the job. 1. Thin, comparted, loosefill insulation. Many homes are insulated with blown mineral wool. Perhaps not enough has been used, or perhaps w4th time, the insulation has settled You need at least six inches of uniform thickness between the joists. '2. Voids dlon^ joists, if you can we vpacee between the insulation and the attic joists, then you have “chimneys” for heat leaks which drain the comfort right out of the living spaces below'. 3. Voids between batts or blankets Every joint between pieces of batt or blanket type insulation steals money by allowing heat to escape. If you have six inches of insulation, with gaps amounting to only five per cent of the attic area, filling the gaps "Will reduce the cost of attic ^at loss by as much as 30

WML V -3 OOnco 0 > 0 0 Left to right, six clues to the attic heat thief—inadequate insulation between joists. U) Thin, compacted, loose-fill insulation. 2.) Voids along joists. 3.) Void* between batts or blankets. 4.) Improper fill, with gaps around bracing, wiring or other obstructions. 5.) Ttx»-lhin blanket insulation. 6.) No •insulation at all. If you find any of these in your attic, you're , losing both heat and heating dollars. Easy remedy: vermiculite granules, poured right over the old insulation to bring it up

to par. per cent. The experts recommend pouring bags of vermiculite, granules light over ’ the 1 old batts. It takes only about ten bags of the low cost, lightweight mineral to fill-in a 1200 square foot -attic, 4. Improper fill. Structural bracing, wiring or other obstructions cause gaps in the old insulation, letting the heat leak through. Vermiculite fills these effectively, easily and permanently. 5. Too-thm blanket insulation. If you can measure less than six inches, there simply isn't enough. It might have been adequate a few years ago. But with fael costs rising every year, six inches is now considered the
