Although Governor Whitcomb has proclaimed Friday, April 14, 1972, as Arbor Day in Indiana, many organizations throughout the state have celebrated it Friday, April 28. In the OregonDavis Schools however, any day can be Arbor Day. In picture 1, students of the Davis Elementary School are shown planting trees on their school grounds on April 21. These students, under the direction of Mr. John Hensler, Fifth Grade Teacher, and Mr. John Slusher, Elementary Principal, planted 100 pine trees on the west side of the school buiding, three large maples and three large oak trees near the playground equipment area, and a yellow rose bush on the south side of the building. I'm just a wheel—a steering wheel. Behind me you are the master of a miracle. You can make me take the kids to school. You can turn me down the sunny road toward town. With me you can guide your goods to the market . . . you can rush the sick to be healed ... you can go in minutes to places hours away. With me you can do magic. Yet In the blink of an eye, in the tick of your watch, I can turn deadly killer. I can snuff out the life of a kid still full of life — maybe YOUR KID. I can twist a smile into tears. I can wreck and cripple and destroy. I can deal out death like the plague.

the direction of Mr. Phillip Bridges, Fourth Grade Teacher, and Mr. Slusher, Principal, are shown planting trees on the east side of their school grounds. Approximately the same number and the same types of trees were planted at Oregon as were plaid'll at Davis. AH of the tree stock planted was donated by Mr. Stanley Hensler, local nurseryman and patron of the Oregon-Davis Schools. Tire youngesters’ efforts at beautifying the school grounds will have a secondary result as the years go by. The trees, as they grow, will provide windbreaks for tile schools. The Oregon-Davis High School is aso planning a planting effort later this month. This will be under the direction of Mr. Qualkenbush, local extension agent.
And I’m no respecter of persons. A child, a grandmother, even YOU, my friend ... it's all the same to me. I respond instantly to the hands you give me. Give me calm hands, steady hands, careful hands . . . and I'm your friend. But give me unsteady hands, reckless hands . . . then I’m your enemy; a menace to the life, happiness, the future of every person, every youngster riding, walking, playing. I was made for pleasure and usefulness. Keep me that way. I'm in your hands. I’m just a steering wheel. But behind me you are the master of a miracle . . . or a tragedy. It's up to you!

Four former winners—Al and Bobby Unser, A. J. Foyt and Mario Andretti-head the entry list and Parnelli Jones may try to duplicate his 1963 triumph.
