falcons Topple Jimtown In Fine Effort Friday The .ronn ut nn rnucons had all the opposition they wanted Fr.day night a 1 a Jimtown five visited and the two teams displayed some fine ba ketLail for the homecoming mow’d and the Falcons won and 87-74 win that was much tighter contested than the f.nal score indicates. For a team that lost everyth ng by graduation last year, the Jimmies have don * a fine job of rebuilding and features one ixtra f.ne standout in Ernie Payton, a fine ill round player who leads the Jimtown five. The victory, the 12 in 16 contests for Glenn, guaranteed th-m their fir. t winning season in the school's history, a long time in getting h- re but now turning out fans at a food rate to help support a winner. dinner Farrell open'd the scoring for the visitors with a hard reverse two handed lay in in heavy traffic. John Harn ss put Glenn on the scoreboard and in the lead with two baskets, one from mne foot and the other from the corner. Bill Flaugher made it 6 to 2 with a seven foot turn around -hot but Mike Lechlitner cashed in two free throws for the Jimmies and Payton got his first two of the night on a rebound thot. Curt Pletcher hit a long jumper and Bruce Dayhuff hit his first of many on a fast break lay in which he released a little early. Mike Kallimani h.t a free throw but Dayhuff took a pas.- behind the Jimtown zone for a lay in but Farrell matched this on a fine pass from Pay ton and Payton then hit from the side. Flaugher hit a free -‘hot but a rebound and shot tack up and in by Payton knotted the score at 13 all. Dayhuff bombed one from the right sde but a free throw by Jerry Dooley and rebound shot by Payton gave the visitor- from Elkhart County a 16-15 lead. Flaugher got a tip in only to have Lechlitner tie it with another free throw and a lay in by Dayhuff with seven seconds left pu hed the Falcons into a 19 to 17 first period lead. For a game that had only four ta ki ts ind two free throws in tli . first half qua: ter, the pace had really quickened in th last four minutes to the fans delight. The two team, started o ut just trad-ng baskets as the second quarter started and action continued fast and thrilling with this go<xi play. Keith Karnes h t the tying basket from the top of the circle but Dayhuff hit a lay ;n. Lechlitner hit a rebound shot and th s time it was Rich Reese with a 12 footer from the bas< line. A 17 footer from the circle by the out-ide shooting Karnes tied it at 23 before Dayhuff and Pletcher hit baskets and Pletcher add'd n free throw to give Glenn a little breathing room. The teams then Simply traded two points for two for over three minutes as PlGtch' r’s outside shooting was Glenn’s bg weapon, until the score was 36 to 33 with less than two minutes left ;n the half. At this point Dayhuff h.t from th? tide. Brad Gillies a free throw and Dayhuff aga.n from 14 foot to jet up in unbelieveable "shot" of 23 foot by Alan Bichtel right a the buzz.r tugive the Fakons a 43 to 33 lead. Play changed and so did the re; ults shortly after the second half stared Dayhuff hit on a f Ist brtak ind Pletcher from in cl > c for a 14 point lead before Kall ; mani tallied from long range and Kaines hit a free throw, a lay in and foul gave Dayhuff a thr e pointer and he then npped the net from 14 foot £©r a 52 to 36 lead before coach Hans decided to slow down the aliens. and coach Stewart of jimtown decided to press on defeme. Pay ton h t a free K illimani a 17 footer Flaugher got a solo lay In as he was all al nc thank- to a slip up on th * p. ( . event players is the four out and one under wasn’t doing anything for Glenn. Th's cut the lead to 54 to 47 until Flaugher hit a rebound shot and then a five footer a, he was th? only Falcon near the basket under the change in offense, Kallimini and Payton singed the nets W th the final baskets of the period and it was 58 to 51 heading into the f.nal e'ght minutes. Payton and Harness traded a free thiow each before Pl tcher's 19 footer broke the slowed down off. rise Jnd the Falcons went to work protect.ng the lead the way they got it- by playing their regular game. Dayhuff followed with a 17 footer and after Kallimani h.t a long. Dayhuff picked up an easy Ily in on a basket hanging shot. Payton hit for the Jimm.es but Gillies started a string of three straight basket by taking the underneath spot aga.nst the pre. s and getting three cripples m a row to ke p Glen ahead by approximately 10. With just nt the thr e minute mark a pair of fielders by George Noggle and Payton plus on e of two by Payton from the foul line within 12 second-, trinnn ng the lead to 5, 71 to 66. A free shot by Pletcher wis followed by Noggle’s nin.footer made it 72-68 with 2:39 still 1 ft to play. Dayhuff -cored from under but Payton caine right back with a 16 footer. Flaugher put a rebound back in and Dayhuff put a short baseline shot in to up the had to 78 to 70 and put the Jimm.es in the spot of having to foul to get the ball. Noggle hit witr 1:03 left, but the Falcon? closed fast with the last seven points to account for the final score of 87-74. Dayhuff paced all scorers as h e once again passed the 30 level getting 35 on 17 baskets and a *ingle free throw. He hit better from the floor in Uns game but still got several lay ins on fast bn akj and a couple on the old basket hanging routine. An 18 points by Flaugher and 16 by Pletcher was the big asset to Dayhuff's total especially the outside shooting of Pletcher’s to make Flaugher and Dayhuff's in close scoring more possible. A 25 point perormance by Payton topp d the J mmies wh.le Kallimani and Karnes had 14 and 13 n spectively, Glenn's B Team came back ;n tiong fashion from an early deficit to win go ng away 55-49 was an almost all junior lineup that account <1 for the B team’s third win of the season.
