Be sure your pet is healthy and properly inoculated. See that his rabies, identification, and license tags are firmly attached to his collar. Take along all his immunization records. Condition your dog for auto travel and hia first vacation trip with several short jaunts. Have someone along specifically to comfort him if the motion of the car unnerves him. If nervousness or cnr sickness persist, consult your veterinarian for a renae^r. Remenijer, too, whenever you leave your pet alone in the oar, be sure he has a shady spot to ait in and plenty of fresh air. Pack a small sastoase or canvas bag with the dog’s gear: food dish, water bowl (both unbreakable), can opener, spoon, walking learti, clothesi line exercise leash, collar, comb and brush for grooming, muzzle, and some old towels for drying the dog or wiping his paws. Include several of his favorite toys and a good supply of dogfood. Insist on discipline while traveling. Don't allow your dog to hang his head out the car window, bark at passing traffic, cavort with the children, or interfere with the driver. Train him to sit or lie on the rear seat — or, in a station wagon, the back deck Pad his spot with an old blanket or rug. Frequently stop the car off the highway in a safe, secluded place. Snap the exercise leash on your pet before opening the car door (surprising how tins prevents runaway dogs). Briskly j exercise him, then pour him a drink of cool water from an insulated jug you carry just for this purpose. Although a dog can be watered _ several times en route, forego feeding until you stop for the day. Most motel operators accept pets, but you nee d to 1 know tor sure —in advance — wheru your dog is welcome. > Local service station dealers can r offer you facte about motels in tl»e area. FOOTBALL PICNICS START WITH A GAME PLAN

NEW YORK (ED) - Football entertaining is something special. Not only does it call for efficient, early service — nothing, not even food, is allowed to interfere with the game-but it’s got to be hearty, without being hard to handle. What the wise wife needs is a culinary game plan that lets everyone get with the gametime action on time — plus plenty of snacks to keep the armchair quarterbacks happy during the game. (As any woman can toll you — even one who doesn’t knew a punt from a pass — football fans, some 100 million strong, seem to get as huagry as if they were on the field themselves.) The best kind of entertaiaing is outdooi-oriented: A tailgate picnic before the game, or a party back in your own backyard, before th? fans adjourn to the family TV. Some of the savoriert outdoor meals begin with NFL Training Tabic - Foods; the fact that they're “football’s own” seems to add a special flavor tathc occasion. If foot’all puttying is’on your fail entertaining schedule, here are three new treats tliat prom: ■ to enter the family Hall of Fame. 6 STEPS TO SAFER WINTER DRIVING By Professor A. H. Easton Director, Motor Vehicle Research Laboratory University of Wisconsin ? • Get the “feel" of the road by accelerating carefully to see if wheels spin; or brake gently to see if they skid. Reduce speed accordingly. 2 • Increase your following distance. It takes three to nine times as far to atop on snow and ice as on dry pavement. 3•“ Pump” your brakes to slow or stop —don’t jam them on. An intermittent pumping action three to five times per second keeps the wheels rolling and helps maintain steering control. 4 • Have good tires with good treads. Better yet, use enow tires which provide half again as much pulling power in snow as regular tires. Studded snow tires offer still mors help on icy surfaces. 5 • Always carry reinforced tire chains in the trunk of your car for use during severe snow and ice conditions. They provide four to seven times as much traction on snow or ice as regular tires. 6* Keep your wmdsidald and windows dear at all times. Replace streaking wiper blades gone dead from ex» posur® to sun, wind and oily road film. Be sure that your windshield washer aahUfoa eonteim adequate anti-freese.
