This is the reason u did not appear, not that we weie ignoi.ug the situation. What mot. people uo not reilize is that a new.-p^pei is responsible legardies- oi who submits an ar tide even if it b i- been paid for- or not. In confer mg with a member of the Town Board and the local dogcatcher, it was decided b\ us that too much was left out to print as it was written. This now spectacular story left out many details that changes the original letter considerably. It didn't state that the dog catcher was asked by the owner oi the uog ana puppies to destroy the animals because ot physical problems with the mother dog. It didn't explain th t the mother dog had already killed two of her puppies. It didn't explain that a veterinarian had been consulted before the decision was' made. It didn't state that the entire event happened in the town dump (lanunll) where the children were playing and certainly is not the desired playground. We are not condoning the man for his methods but we , arc not criticizing him for the

ucliens lie took. We aie nut criticizing the children Lu tiying tu save the puppies li\ s. We feel bid judgement, was u>ed in the method of destroying the dogs but also feel he was doing a job. Much has happened since the story bioke in the Sou.h Bend Tribune last week. The St. Joseph County Humane Society has asked for the dismissal of the dog ciicher and asked the town to build facilities to house dogs until they can pick them up. They didn't know that the now resigned dog catcher had facilities to house such as this and they certainly didn’t offer to extend then sei vices ito include this often forgotten part of the county. They further turned words around to satisfy their own desires concerning one of many phone calls to the Town Board president. The Tribune added to the bad situation by writing the “sensational" part of the story using facts to make it more ex .--ca tching than news report, ing. The bad situation con. tinues. The former dog catcher has received threatening phone calls and letters, the town has received mail of similar content and worst of all no one D now fill.ng ihe post to handle stray, maybe mad •dogs and in all probability, vxouldn t touch the job now. It was a bad situation, a mistake was made and certainly a lesson learned after this episode. It was a much wiser mind than mine, the Tribune reporter, the humane society party or the original letterwriter that said: "To err is human, to forgve divine’."
