SHAMROCKS AND FALCONS PLAY TO 12 ALL TIE FRIDAY
The John Glenn Falcons and the North Liberty Shamrocks met on the gridiron F. iday night in their traditional batt.e and after the dust had c eared, a 12 to 12 tie was the result. The Shamrocks, with the backs to the wall twice early .n the contest, fought bravely back to assume a 12-0 halftime lead but tiie running of Jot; Jaske in the second haJ found the Fa cons coming light back to tie the game late m the final period. The result was that the Falcons now boast a 3-1-11 record with a 2-0 1 Northern State Conference record and the Shamrocks are 0 3-1 in season play and now 0-1 1 in confe.ence action. The Falcons truly bew two eany chances in this contest as they kicked off to the Shamrocks to open the game on.y to recover a North L berty fumble on the second play from scrimmage on the Shamrock 13 yard line. A couple of runn ng play s picked up 7 yards and it appeared they were on their way, omy someone forgot to tell the scrappy Shamrocks who he d the Falcons to just one yard on the next two rushes and the Shamrocks took possession at the r own 5. Apparent tragedy struck once more for North Liberty as they gamed a first down out to the 15 and fumbled once more, again the Falcons, in the person of Mike Ameling, recovering the ball, this time on the Shamrock 18. However, a Falcon fumble squi.ted loose and Devon Robs gathered in the loose pigskin on the Shamrock four. Th s time things were different. Two running plays netted six yards and on a crucial third down situation, instead of just p.eking up a first down. Mark Shearer s ipped out of the backfield ail alone and took a short pass Jium Mike Wesolek and proceeded to pick up a total of 65 yards before he was overtaken at the Falcon 32. A short pass and two luna netted enough for a first down and Wesolek went to the we 1 again w.th the same play that netted the long ga n and flipped to Mark Shearer who just made it to the goal line for the game s first score. The net result was 96 yards in seven olfensive p.ays and a 6-0 lead after the conve.son run was no good This came with 3:46 .est in the opening quarter. The two teams pretty well contained each other for most of the rest of the first half unt.l the Shamrocks took advantage of a break of their own makings late in the second qua. ter. With time running out and the Falcons ,n possess.on on thenown 27, a hard charge by the Shamrock defense jarred Falcon quarterback Jim Lute as be was attempting a long pass Fa ling well short of the intended receive.-, Greg Gensinger pulled it in and raced back to the Falcon 31 Three running plays picked up 18 yards with Mike Wesolek ca ling his own number twice for 15 of those yards. He then tossed to end B !1 Snyder for an overall 13 yard play and their second score. Once again the try for two points on a run was short and the Shamrocks held a 12-0 lead with just 38 seconds left in the ha f. In the first ha'f the Sham rocks had dominated play runn ng 33 plays to Glenn's 28, but picking up ]sl ya ds to Glenns 83 and st ven first downs to the Falcons four. The second half was quite a difference however, as the Fa - cons started moving the bail. It was obvious from the start as
they, alter rere ving the kickoff, gathered up three fit st downs and 37 yards, grinding it out on the ground until another fumble stopped the drive. However, the Shamrocks returned the ball on anothe fumble of their own a tew plays atci and the Falcons took possess.on on their own 39 After two illegal proceedure calls backed them up 10 yards, they started down field. A crucial persona' foul ga\c the Falcons their first fi st down of the drive and then a face mask v o lation added 15 more yards to the cause. Jaske then circ.ed his own left end for a 23 yard sprint into the end zone to put the first score on the boa d. A b t of confusion fol.owed the extra point kick that was first signaled good and then no good, but a penalty gave the Fa cons another crack at it. wh ch was wide. Trailing 12- 6 with 2:5(1 left in the third period, t me was a factor but on y if the Falcons con d contain the Shamrock offense. Late in the game, the b g break came. After Glenn put another dr ve together, they ran short on a fourth down play, putt.ng the ball in the North Liberty Sham ocks' possession once more at their own 33. A seven yard oss on one play fin ally forced a fourth and 11 from their own 29 and .nstead of giving up the ball on a punt, Mike Wesolek t ied to run and was nailed at his own 33. giv ng the Falcons a real break An eight play diive was culminate piny drive was culminated with Jaske s ipp ng free around left end for the final n ne yards and the tying score. This time the all impo. tant extra po nt was blocked to keep the score knotted nt 12 - -2 On y 1:39 remained to play at this time. Both teams had possession in this final 1:39 but nether could make a sizeable gain, resulting in the tie.
