Cycle Hit* Locomotive And Kills Youth James Alan Brown, 19, of 25352 Martindale Road. North Liberty, was killed instantly at the Ginger Hill crossing of the Penn-Central railroad on Indiana 23, about six miles west of South Bend. He was killed about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9 when the motorcycle he was riding slammed into the train at an estimated speed of 50 miles per hour. The youth hit the second engine of the train and the motorcycle was dragged 200 feet north down the tracks and caught on fire. The body was found about 30 feet from the crossing. The train was traveling at an estimated speed of 45 miles per hour. Brown suffered a broken neck, crushed chest and other multiple injuries. The engineer of the train. W. P. Mobbs, of Kankakee. Illinois, told Deputy Rowe that he saw the youth heading west toward the crossing. Mobbs said Brow n was riding downhill and was crouched down towards the front of the cycle as if to cut down wind friction Rowe said the youth apparently did not see the train until he was about 100 feet from the tracks when he applied his brakes but was unable to stop. Officers said the crossing is marked by a flashing red light signal which was operaitng at the time of the accident. According to Rowe, approaching trains are not visible from the road until motorists are 100 feet from the tracks. The track runs through the bottom of a valley with hills to the north and south blocking view of appoaching trains. The deputy said a ripped hose was the only damage to the train engine.
