PERE MARQUETTE STATE PARK The largest state park in Illinois is historic Pere Marquette State Park, six miles west of Grafton on State 100. Just west of the town on the scenic road is a cross of native stone which marks the entrance to the 2,600 acre park. The cross is a monument to Father Jacques Marquette who landed there in 1673. The ex-plorer-priest was one of the first white men to discover what is now Illinois. Marquette used the site, near the junction of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers, as a landmark and camping point. Visitors can still view the Mississippi and Illinois river junction and the backwaters of the Missouri River from Pere Marquette State Park. Another point of historical in-

Yes, It*s true — we are building a brand new’ — everything-new — store In Walkerton. We have been overwhelmed at the interest shown in our plans and all the good wishes offered so we are publicly going to answer some of the many questions we have been asked. * When are we going to buHd? Immediately. We are breaking ground this week.' Ilas anyone tried to stop us from coming to Walkerton? No. We have had fine cooperation from the town and w’ell wishes from a great many people. How big will our store be? Nine thousand square feet. This is nearly one thousand square feet larger than our present store. Who will manage our new store? Mr, Jack Buswell. The former manager of the A A P and also either John or Roy Wilcox will be at the store most of the time. Will we have service meats and meat cutters to wait on trade? Yes. Our meat department will be slightly large* than the one in North Liberty. 3 Will we have off street parking. Yea, lota of It. . Enough for hearty 10© cam. Will we still have the same good meat since we sold our farm? Yes. Our feedlots provided less than 10% of the beef we handle. We purchase huge numbers of both live and dressed cattle every week practically all of which are quality corn fed beef. We personally select this beef and since we are Wholesale dealers we do hanlde thousands oj head of cattle each year. This buying power is reflected in the retail price you pay and we can as a rule
terest is McAdams Peak, nmned for the doctor who unearthed 125 Indian skeletons there. And for just plain outdoor recreation, Pere Marquette State Park is also outstanding. Visitors with a special love for nature and wildlife may trek the park alone or join one of the organized hikes, supervised by a trained guide. A time schedule for the hikes, which are free, is posted in the park. Many miles of wooded trails crisscross the park and you will observe dozens of different varieties of trees, some of them rare for this area, for 60 different species have been identified here. A few whitetail deer roam the park and you may suddenly encounter one on the trail. Probably a few wildcats and coyotes still make their home here but it is unlikely you will ever get a

glimpse of them. Avid bird watchers particularly like the park because it lies just across the river from a federal game and wildlife refuge and on the migratory "highway" followed instinctively by all varieties of birds as they head south in the fall and return again in the spring. While hiking you will eventually come acioss Trailside Museum, located at the edge of the woods, which is staffed by a naturalist. He will point out the different museum exhibits and explain their relationship to the animals, plant life, archaeology. and geology of the park. Speedboat and excursion boat rides on the Illinois river provide tourists with a leisurely way to see the river valley and park bluffs from a different viewpoint. Rowboats may be rented for casual pleasure rides or for fishing. The park operates its own stables and 14 miles of good bridal paths give riders lots of room to exercise their mounts. A number of areas have been designated throughout the park for picnicking, camping, and parking house trailers. All are equipped with tables, approved woodburning stoves with fuel, running water, and sanitary facilities. Campsites are free but you must register with the park custodian who will assign a site and issue a permit good for one week. Overnght visitors may stay at the massive park lodge built of colorful native stone and rustic timber, or at one of the seven stone guest houses located on a picturesque hillside behind the lodge. Advance reservations are required to avoid inconvenience, reminds the Chicago Motor Club. The lodge serves excellent food and acts as the center for all park activities. Guests may use its badminton, shuffleboard, and horseshoe courts, and there are two well-equipped playgrounds for the children. Seat Belts Do Save Lives
Rave you money in addition to assuring you of good fresh meat. What will the new store look like? The layout is almost identical to our North Liberty store with the exception the aisles will be wider and there will be more room at the meat counters and at the check out stands. What line of groceries will we handle? The same as in North Liberty. This grocery company Is the second largest Co-op in the nation and this year Will gross over $300,000,000. They have one warehouse that covers 22 acres. Their products are good and their prices are low. We don't know of any grocery house where we can do better. Where can a person apply for a job in the new store? When the new building is completed it will be quite sometime before all the cases, coolers and shelving are in so we will take applications shortly before we start stocking the new store. Why do we want to build In Walkerton? We like Walkerton and hope Walkerton will like us. We don’t know of another town the size of Walkerton that offers its people so much and has the growth potential that Walkerton has. You have new schools, new churches, a new bank, a new post"offlce, a new drug store, a medical clinic, a major highway, three railroads for excellent transportation, a fine industrial park and an active Chamber of Commerce and town board. Yes indeed, Walkerton has a lot to offer and we want to be a part of this town. We hope this answers some of the questions and we assure you we want your business in our new store and we will do everything possible to try to earn it. Roy and John Wilcox

KICK THE HABIT June is busting out all over. With KICK THE HABIT campaigns against cigarette smoking. Christmas Seal associations across the country are waging an intensive, month-long campagin to urge smokers to chuck their cigarettes. For a day, a week, a month. Forever, hopefully. Becoming a nonsmoker takes pratice. Most smokers try to quit once and fail. * And try again—and again. It’s all practice and eventually they kick the habit or cut down drastically. But some heavy smokers simply have to quit "cold turkey." They are so hungup on smoking that they have to make a dramatic and complete break. Smokers who quit successfully adopt certain attitudes. They see quitting as a big plus and smoking as a major minus.
