□ □ OBITUARIES □ □ Claude D. Shoemaker Claude D. Shoemaker, 57, of 30692 New Road, died Saturday at E Street Division Hospital, LaPorte. He was a truck driver for Gateway Trucking. He was born June 26, 1912, in Logansport and was a resident of North Liberty for the past 35 years. He was married to Edith M. Prater, April 22, 1944, w’ho survives with two sons, Gregory and Kent, beth at home; three brothers, Loy or North Liberty and Paul of Logansport, and Grayston, of Samuels, Idaho; a sister, Mrs. Velma Seymour, of Pontiac, Michigan. He was a member of Teamster Union Local 325. Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the A. M. Manuel Funeral Home. North Liberty with Rev. Kent Bennett officiating. Burial was in Westlawn Cemetery, North Liberty, Ernest Hayter Word was received here Sunday morning of the death of Mr. Ernest Hayter. Mr. and Mrs. Hayter spent their winters in Florida and were building a new home in New Smyrna Beach and expected to move in this summer. Mr. Hayter was born in England. May 25, 1905. He died Sunday morning. May 24 in a hospital in New’ Smyrna Beach. He was married to Ruth Perkins on August 5. 1931, who survives. Other survivors include a son, Robert, in Saigon who lives in Texas; one daughter, Mrs. Charles (Ted) Daube of Walkerton; one brother, Albert of New’ Smyrna Beach; two sisters, Mrs. Robert Stevens of Little Falls, New Jersey and Miss Dora Hayter of LaPorte, and five grandchildren. Mr. Hayter was a resident of Johnson Township since 1918. He was a member Os the Johnson Township Gun Club, Farm Bureau and Tracy United Methodist Church. Funeral services and burial were in r J • ‘

Florida. Mr. and Mrs. Ted Daube and Mrs. Marion Robison left by plane Sunday noon for Florida. Mrs. John O. Clark Mrs. Minnie O. Clark, 84, of Walkerton, died at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, May 20 at the Walkerton Nursing Home after an extended illness. Born January 17, 1886 in Middlebury, Inidana, she had lived here for 50 years. In August, 1916 at Goshen, Indiana she was married to John Clark, who died November 30, 1961. She is survived by three sons, Dr. John W. Clark of Chicago, Dr. Robert R. Clark of Rome, Georgia, and Dr. Max D. Clark of Birmingham, Michigan; a daughter, Mrs. William Heim of Walkerton; and nine grandchildren. Services w’ere conducted at 3 p.m. EDT Friday in the Nusbaum Funeral Home by Rev. Harold E. Williams, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Walkerton. Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery, Walkerton. Mrs. Clark was a member of the Walkerton United Methodist Church and the W.S.C.S. Mrs. Vada Sinclair Mrs. Vada Sinclair, 71 of route 3, Walkerton, died at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, May 19 at the Osteopathic Hospital after an extended illness. She was born May 17, 1899, in Hamlet. She had lived here for the past 17 years coming from Hobart. She was married in 1927 in Hamlet to William Bruce Sinclair. He died July 7, 1958. Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Louella Laramore, of Los Angeles; and a sister, Miss Gladys Laramore, of Hamlet. Services were held Friday, May 22 at the Nusbaum Funeral Home with the Rev. Ken ; Bergner, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery. She was a member of Moose Lodge 633, Knox, and she a member of the Evening Star Rebekah Lodge in Walkerton. □ — --ZZZZ2— D CARDS OF THANKS □—— — * Q I want to thank all mv friends who remembered be while I was in the hospital, and for all the cards and flowers, and for Rev. much appreciated. I also want to thank Rev. Williams for coming to visit me and the fine prayers. Mrs. Carrie Walter BETTER HOMES EXTENSION CLUB MEETS The meeting was brought to order by the vice president, Mrs. Clyde Stickley. The club creed was recited by all. Roll call was answered by “Name a quality you admire in your mother.’’ The lesson “Creole Cuisine of New Orleans" was given by Mrs. Howard Clingenpeel and Mrs. Albert Ray. Mrs. Clingenpeel gave a very interesting demonstration on how to make Bananas Foster. The meeting was closed with the Club Collect. Refreshments of Bananas Foster with ice cream and beighets was served by the hostesses, Mrs. Howard Clingenpeel and Mrs. Joseph Cromey. Mrs. Fayette Dunn and Mrs. Agnes Harrell received the door prizes. Hostesses for June are Mrs. Harry Fry and Mrs. J. Dean Knowlton. SENIOR FELLOWSHIP MEETING The Senior Fellowship will meet Monday evening, June Ist at the Illinois Street building of the United Methodist Church, Walkerton. There will be a carry-in dinner at 6:30. Miss Ruth Snyder of Plymouth will be the speaker for the evening. She will show’ pictures of the covered bridges and tell of their history. This will be an especially interesting program. and we will be happy to share it with all who wish to come and enjoy the evening with us. CAKE BAKING CONTEST All homemakers are invited to enter the cake baking contest on Thursday. June 4, sponsored by the Better Homes DemonstratinO Club. An entry blank must be filled out. Clip it from the Independent Newspaper or contact Mrs. Wade Hostetler. Cakes must be at the bank between 12 noon and 2:30 EDT, on June 4. Prizes and ribbons will be awarded. There will be five divisions; angel food, butter, dark chcolate, box and misc. The cakes must be frosted and on a disposable plate or cardboard. Entries must be turned in by Saturday, May 30. First prize winners of each category will receive a silver cake server.

Rainbow News Three members of the Walkerton Rainbow for Girls Assembly were congratulated Monday evening for having received scholarship awards at their commencement Sunday evenng. Carol Taylor, Worthy Advisor, received the Eastern Star Scholarship; Lynn Pickavet received a scholarship from Ball State College and Jolanna Erickson received the Ancilla Domini College award. Following the meetng rehearsal was held for inspection of the Assembly to be held in Walkerton June 8. The North Judson Assembly will be here for inspection at the same time. Super Mom Hazel Thompson Coats of Attica will be present. Marianna Kersh, Worthy Advisor elect announced the date for her inspection had been changed again to June 12 on Friday evening at 7:30. Mother Advisor, Mrs. Bruce Henry asked that the chairman of the scrapbook and fan committee and their helpers meet at her home the evening of June 17 to get them ready to take to Grand Assembly. Marianna Kersh and Debbie Six are chairmen, respectively. TRACK AND HELD DAY The North Liberty Elementary School Track and Field Day will be held today, May 28, atl:4s p.m. Parents are invited to attend. The events will be for both boys and girls In grades one thru eight. Boys and girls, 50 yard dash for grades 1-3 and running events and field events for grades 4 thru 8.
