SATURDAY AND SUNDAY is sti 'duled to be the start of the qr lifying runs for the worlds gu (test sporting event, the Indianapolis 500 mile race. In all. four days and 26 hours are set aside for the b 4 cars entet d to make their qualifying ruts at the 2’u mile oval but if this year follows the normal May pattern in Indianapolis, lh< weather will again have an eftect on the qualifying runs. 1 IST YEAR. ONE CAR WAS ni thing an attempt thru the luck of the draw, that being rookie “Jiuger" Sirois. He was flagged off the track after three lap at a relatively slow 161 ph but as the weathermen final!' de< ided. this would have been the pole position as 160 ph r ^made th^ starting field. Otl ‘i than Jigger s run. no one else tried it due to the rain and btd weather. Come Sunday, the sec; nd day of the time trials, rain again and once more no cat - made it on the track to attempt their runs. This gave th final two days to the drivers t । let them all try Saturday and was a behive of activity. In the lust couple of hours the field was half full and times Wete soaring. HOWEVER, AS IS USUALLY th. case, the better drivers and let's face it, better machines, g<t on the top of the list in their battle for the pole. Times then started to slip a little and in tie real heat of the Saturday aft moon, activity slowed down. Th field iwas easily finished Sun lay and some bumping attempts were tried, but when the fin I results were in, the speeds weren’t affected much by the postponement of the first two du

SATURDAY WILL FIND the bulk of the top names out on the track if their equipment is ready. That tremendous battle for the front spots means so much in a race as working through the large field can cost a good driver a lot of time on the leaders even though he is passing cars like mad. You can be sure if the cars are running right, and the speeds are picking up every day in practice, and the weatherman cooperates, you will hear names like Foyt, Andretti, Leonard, the Unsers, Guerney, Johncock and a whole host of others, trying to crack that top time of the day. The foreign contingement of drivers also will have to be recognized with this year again as several have been doing outstanding jobs in the early jobs. THE WORD OUT OF INDY is that once again driving is the big factor as after a few years of about every innovation that could be expected came into the limelight, it is mostly back to the rear engine Fords and Offenhausers. The Offy's seem to be making a real comeback again as this engine is one that just can’t be kept down as the Meyer-Drake people aren't content to stay number two. Tremendous advances in. tires the past few years have also added to the speeds and handling of the cars as tires now are going the entire 500 miles without danger. Only after a car slides is a mandatory change of rubber made. THE MONTH LONG ACTlvities are rapidly coming to the big climax as though it doesn't seem possible, the middle of May is here and it won't be long until that famous phrase of "Gentlemen, start your engines’’ rings out over the crowd of over 300,00 peple and the greatest spectacle in racing unfolds. Leonard, Dan Gurney and Gordon Johncock are other contenders hopeful of regaining the front row positions they have earned on previous occasions. Al Unser, who missed last year’s "Indy” race because of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident, and Lloyd Ruby also are strong "pole” candidates on the basis of their lap speeds in practice. Approximately $40,000 in cash ( prizes are at stake in the time , trials and the fastest qualifier has a chance to collect about half of that amount.
