1 A LONG HOT SUMMER? b
k The long hot summer was i J movie title a tew years ago and now it is a statement we all must look forward to this year, starting now. Tranter 'the thought from the temperature to the activitu s and unrest that will prevail and it is a topic that can help to make or break this great land of ours. Troubles have started again around college campuses and in the past three weeks at least three biuldmgs at various colleges have been destroyed by fire. Demonstrations are the cause of it as protests against the country's draft and foreign policy have led to this. Demonstrating and destruction are the two entirely different things ( but in recent years they have i gone hand in hand. Another , thing to pop up in recent years i that has been a real topic for conversation and copy for news media is the Rock Festivals. At these events, thousands upon thousands of older teens or young adults attend for a day or two of "doing their thing." However, doing their things has centered around nudity. sex , drugs, alcohol and destruction. Deaths have been present at about all of them, a knifing, beating or some such way. Nudity is gaining the big

(This editorial came to our attention this past week, and is a reprint from the Lawrence I Journal. We would like to share it with you.) In May of 1919, at Dusseldorf, Germany. the Allied Forces obtained a copy of seme of the "Communist Rules for Revolution." Nearly 50 years later the Reds are still following the rules. As you read the first - stop after each item and think about the present day situation where you liveand all around the nation. We quote from the Red Rules: A. Corrupt the young: Get them away from religion. Get them interested in sex. Make them superficial, destroy their ruggedness. B. Get control of'all means of publicity. 1. Get people's minds off ; their government by focusing t their attention on sexy books and plays and other trivialities. 2. Divide the people into hostile groups by constantly harping on controversial mat-

headlines sucU as 50 or more striped and waded in a creek at the recent Wisconsin festival and as a reporter put it, a young lady was sunbathing while people milled all around dressed only in her rose colored glasses. Drugs are openly sold and used. They seem to be the outstanding item at such things and very openly. Getting their kicks and thrills from drugs and taking their trips are very common. Fights, brawls, an« even murders are not hidden as one report stated a young boy was killed right in front of the platform where the performers were right in view of thousands. All of this started ir April and when the weather becomes a little more seasonal more will develope. Just what the answer is cannot be stated Letting this age group express themselves is often reported as good, but listening to the reports that follow are tragic It is true that this is a small majority of people, but never theless, the trend is started and if control isn't administered at the early level, it will increase time and time again taking in a larger number of our country's future leaders This could shape the future of the country for the years to come.

Capehart, 500 Festival Queen Ann Rachelle Bollei and a yet unnamed driver, will chug into action Saturday to lead Indiana's "Operation Cleansweep" into a month-long land pollution cleanup. The unique statewide program, first of its kind to be sponsored by any state's chief executive, will be kicked off in ceremonies at the State Capitol at 11 a.m., May 9. Some 5,000 litterbags provided by the State Highway Department will be distributed together with "Operation Cleansweep" buttons which will be given to anyone desirous of devoting as many or as few hours as they can toward making Indiana the cleanest state in the union during May. Here is Walkerton's chance to get into a statewide operation. All it takes is a little effort on your part to help clean up the town. Everyone can give a hand to pick up the cans, papers, cartons and etc., from the roadside and yards. The fire department could even get involved by washing the streets, the organizatins could get a project together helping fix-up the town either by picking up litter in the park to going along the streets picking up litter. The old cars that are not licensed and parked here and there could be towed away to get rid of some of the eyesores that make our town look bad. Think about this and act during the month of May. lyt’s all get behind the "Operation Cleansweep." —MS G — On Sunday, May 10. Mother's Day, the first worship service will be held in the new United Methodist Church. Services on the cornerstone laying will be at the 11 o'clock service and in the afternoon at 3, there will be a service of music by the Chancel Choir featuring James Green. Open House is at 3:30 p.m Then on the 17th of May the Consecration service will be held at the 11 a.m. service. —MS G — The Flower Baskets were hung on Thursday of last week in time for May Day. Now the swinging gardens are washed and washed and all aglow to help mertime. —MS G — Are you a Taurus, born between April 21 and May 21, you are. You have a love of the country, gardens and flowers is thinly implanted in the minds of all you Taureans, who generally are contented with their possessions which means much to you. Not pirticularly enterprising. "ou prefer to conserve and prosper in well-tried ways Oversti ess of misuse of these mean inei tia, itogginess, obstinancy and a tendency to sus-
picion of more lively TwOple. Taking into account their Love of flowers, one way An which they can avoid these barriers is by sending them to loved ones, . regardless of the season. Taureans tend to be reliable, : careful,, steadfast persons ot ! pleasant ways. Pink is their ! color, emerald their birthstone ■ and the hyacinth their flower. ; They are the type of person to bull their way up to the top. Those bom under the sign of Taurus are better in a position of trusted responsibility rather than as a "go-getter," better in country pursuits than in town, and better where they can deal with art and beauty rather than where they might be upset by too much movement. — MSG — MOM IS A QUEEN — A common possession of the entire world is a mother. Everyone has-or has had-a mother And where a man's home may be his castle, on Mother's Day, mom is queen for the day. In America, Mother’s Day has been celebrated on the second Sunday in May since 1914 when Woodrow Wilson proclaimed this national observance. But America wasn’t the first nation to honor mothers. Centuries ago the ancient Greeks held a festival each spring for Rhea, the Mother of the gods. And. Early Christians honored Mary on the fourth Sunday before Easter, when children customarily placed flowers on the altars of the churches where they had been baptized, and gave small gilts to their mothesr. In ’ Great Britian, "Mothering Day" is the second largest gilt giving holiday. The observance oroginated in early England when servants and apprentices eagerly awaited the day when they could go-a-mother-mg.” Delighted mothers looked forward to these rare visits and clutched bunches of primroses their children collected as tokens of affection. Actually, the first Mother’s Day in this country took place in 1907 as an unofficial celebration originated by Anna M. Jarvis whose idea it was to honor all American mothers with a special day. By 1911 the observance had spread so widely that there was not a state in the country in which special exercises were not held. Since then, recognition of the day has grown on an international scale, to England. Sweden, Denmark, India, Africa, France, Mexico, Australia, Germany and other countries including some behind the Iron Curtain. It was also Miss Jarvis who named the carnation as the official Mother's Day flower, and thus, the tradition of givng flowers to mom began. Like Mother's Day, this customary way of remembering mom has continued and burgeoned through the years. Certainly. Mother’s Day 1970 has as much, if not more, significance now as it did back in 1907 as it marks a special day to express a love which cannot be weakened by distance. It’s ad day for joy, for memories, and for the glad greetings of a child to his mother.
