THE LONGEST AND MOST interesting of ail pre-event sports pi og rams is now unfolding at Indianapolis where prep. ations ai • being made for the 1970 Memorial Day 500 mile i.lc. The annual event will pit 33 of the country's top drivers in a race foi a record purse of oxer SSOO.OOO and fame like no other lacing event can bestow. B t all of this is a few weeks, th usands of dollars, some good h d preparation and a little lick away. RUNNING AT INDY HAS TO be i high point in a driver's t u ‘er if not ti e thrill alone, foi the money involved. This ye: i not only Indy type car dir.crs will be attempting to Im ke the fi>ld and take the checkered fl..g. but foreign race C ixers, some leading slock car •drivers, road race drivers and ab at anyone else who can quali--1 is a p.lot for one of these rat ng machines. THE TIME TRIALS WILL be held this year on Saturday and S i day. May 16 and 17 and again on the same two days of the week on May 23 and 24. The job •n n facing the owners, mechanics pit ciew and drivers is to Jr.ake man and machine work in the best possible condition for that 500 mile drive that puts them in the starting field. Much is anticipated in the form of driving this year as the cars are once again basically rear engine Fords or Orrys and not siih a conglomerate of machine as has been taking place the last few years There is one tut bine entered, but it is felt the tut line isn't competitive with the restrictions put on them last yea r. MANY FAVORITES AND very familiar names in speed will be present with the entire field aiming for the first place finish of Mario Andretti of last year. In the list of top names Is Bobby and Al Unser, A. J. Foyt, several foreign drivers that have shown well in recent years Dm Guemey, Gordon Johncock, L: । d Ruby. Joe Leonard and ji I ri.-S tt.-Sim. many others. To date in USAC competition, three different drivers have won the first three events and it looks to be a wide open affair for Indianapolis this • year. ANOTHER ADDED PLUS IS I the fact that three of the four , turns have been resurfaced this year and this is expected to add a couple of miles an hour to the speed of the low slung little power plants that circle the tiack m well under a minute now as opposed to a few year: 1 ago when such speeds as 150 were considered tops It i.i expected that the one lap record of 171 plus is in serious shape as the lead-footed men assault the track. These daredevils ot the sport flirt with death and yet are spurred on by the tremendous enticement of compete tion, not just living dangerously and the thought of danger. They are a rare breed that give to us many a thrill in this very popular sport. THE HOT AND HEAVY Action is now getting underway after a few days with a speed limit to let the drivers who are present to get used to the track. Much time will be spent trying to get as many entries ready tG take that run as possible. However, several of the cars will never make it on the track a.° they are back-up cars for the leading drivers. If nothing hap pens to their first choice, they will just idle. Others will nevei find a suitable driver. Severn' owners enter a car and then simply pick it up and take i1 home as 84 entries are by far more cars than there are drivers ready for Indianapolis. ROOKIES WILL BE TAKING their driving tests and hoping to get all the steps in early to be able to open it up early ia practice runs. Some of the top drivers of years before will be pulling in late, but the hustli an i bustle that is connected with this longest preliminary in sports, will keep the old race track humming with lights burn ing all night in many of tho garages in Indy. TIME TRIALS ARE ONLY a week and two days away and often in this preparation period. th< time passes way to fast with bad weather enteiing in the picture. Should w< ather be good up to and including Saturday. May 16, a lot of qualifications will take place that day. 11 not blessed with good weather, the field will start taking about any time they can get on the following days. On several occasions, limited running time has really affected the qualifying with many drivers and cars not even getting oft the lino in the pits. THE 500 IS A LOT OF things. It is a lot of color the entire month of May and excitement galore in the qualifying days and especially on rate day It is not only the richest event in that or any other spoit for a
single day, but also a spectacle that can be topped by none. Just the color and pagentry of the event and the crowd makes it a day one will never forget. .The whole thing is unfolding now in Indianapolis, the racing capitol of the world
