Conservation Is Topic For Meeting Os Club Friday Color slides taken and shown by Conservation Officer Russell Sherwood at the Woman’s Community Club Benedict Night on April 3, provided an interesting and informative evening. While most of the pictures were in St. Joseph County where Officer Sherwood is assigned .there were others of southern Indiana and Michigan . There were scenes of beauty as well as those depicting hunting and fishing. Outstanding among the slides were those showing the current flower show at Pottawatamie Park. The flowers were of numerous varieties and of exceptional beauty. Officer Sherwood indicated as was shown on the slides that there was pollution in some lakes and streams in the St. Joseph County area, particularly a bad situation prevails in the St. Joseph River. Strangely enough in certain locations there were “fish kills,’’ where gar, shad, and carp, considered undesirable to eat fish were killed by lack of oxygen during the winter season; the game fish however, seemed not to have been affected by this condition He informed the group how the biologists of the Department test the fish to determine if they are growing properly. This is done by weighing and measuring them and taking scales winch when placed under a microscope will indicate whether or not the growth of the fish is normal. He also told how fields of sorghum are planted in certain areas of the country to provide food and cover for the birds. The audience was informed that it is illegal to possess an animal known as the Ferret unless just cause has been estblished for a person to own one. (These animals are illegally used to flush out rabbits.) In ‘the area of Crumstown there are numerous foxes which are detrimental to wild life he said. The county is offering a $3 bounty for every fox killed. Boaters were warned to “feel out unfamiliar waters because hazards often he hidden just

A local man, identified as Art Baker by a member of the audience, was shown in one of the slides with a good sized trout. Officer Sherwood said he is dometimes referred to as the “game protector," but he was also called many other names which he thought best not to mention. The Conservation Department, he added, is now known as the Department of Natural Resources. The concern of the Conservation Officer is to protect wild life, birds, and animals and property so that all may have an equal opportunity to enjoy the pleasure sports oifered by lakes, rivers, streams, and forests.
