Their bench also had all the ingredients even though perhaps not the scoring punch of the regulars, but they can go down the line several spots and not feel much of a loss. IT IS HARD TO REALIZE just how good this team was. WD-n pushed by Mun' le Central, they showed power plus, especially on the inside where the boa d play was really wicked Muncie is not a soft team underneath. but the battle against the East Chicago power was more than the Bearcats could handle for an entire bailgame They also proved they could stop the speed of the Muncie team which has used good rebounding and strong fast-break basketball in achieving their success this year. THE ACTION STARTED ON S>t uday with the two underdog teams, Carmel and Loogootee. Both were sentimental favorites due to the small school tag Loogootee carries and Carmel because of the STO" state record scoring guard. Dave Shepherd. This was an exciting game until late when Carmel pulled away to a safe lead. It wasn't the best played, but the thrills and exi itement of the ar tion kept it very interesting The hot shooting Shepherd, although not hitting the extremely good pel rentage he is capable of. turned in quite a game with his 28 points, and especially his passing an i all around play. At hi- s'l(l' lie ended the game tied

for tops in rebounding for Carmel and made umpteen passes that set up teammates for good shots, only to have several of them missed THEN CAME THE BATTLE of the favorites. Although East Chi ago came into the tourney unlx ten, the coaches of Indiana th* naJit before showed a preference for Muncie Central The game took off fast and hard with the emphasis on the hard. Playing power basketball underneath, the overall strength of the Rough Riders began to show through and already known as a strong half into a one sided contest. This set the stage for the finale ... the powerhouse club versus the hot shot Shepherd Most felt that Shepherd would be so hard pressed he wouldn’t score well and that the game would be a rout. Well., all Shepherd did was set a new final game record by hitting 40 points True, he did shoot a lot, but he also had a close checking defense on him all over the court He was certainly, out of necessity. a one man show. The Carmel team had some other good players, but none that could match the power of the Rough Riders. THIS PUT THE FINISHING touches on the basketball season. Now for the many scnools. it is on to other sports. Something is always missing in this state when the basketball is put away, but it has been a long season and one that has had many thrills and highlights for the Indiana teams. YET TO COME IS THE NAMing of the All Star team that will meet Kentucky in the benefit games in June. The final game seen the two top candidates for the covoter title of "Mr Basketball'* as Bradley and Shepherd have to be the two top ranked players in the state. These two are outstanding and there are some other fine players in the state also to be named that will once again give Indiana a fine team if the balloting isn't again central Indiana controlled With this, basketball will slip into the moth balls for a while and a look at next year will find a lot of changes in power as many good clubs this year were senior dominated. There is always that next year and another time to look forward to as one of the greatest of all high school spectacles has ended, the state tourney in Indiana, often called the basketball capitol of the country. INDEPENDENT BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT Last week PLJ Teachers was the fourth team to be eliminated from the double - elimination Tournament The semi-finals will b. held this week with Ma-honcy-M inn meeting Shamrock and Dave X Ray's vs Mas-Steel The fin d game will be played Wednesday. April 1, as a part of the Jaycees and Athletic Department benefit night The games will be held at the Urey Middle School
