were lucky to escape their own sectional. However, Jeff just about pulled the upset of the day. It took a great come from behind effort by the Rough Riders to edge out Jeff by a slim two points in the final minute, 56-54. THE FIREWORKS CONTINued at night as this pitted the top ranked Rough Riders against the fourth lanked Red Devils. Action was hot and heavy the entire game and Michigan City moved to a comfortable 13 point halftime load. 45-32. The Rough Riders then started a comeback in the second half and finally took the lead from Michigan City late in the contest to win another thrilling come from behind game by a 82-78. This let the number one ranked unbeaten East Chcago entry head this week end's list at Indianapolis. AT INDIANAPOLIS. ACTION wasn't as close as the other three sites. In the opening game. Muncie Central and Indianapolis Attacks won expected victories over Columbus and South Ripley respectively in the afternoon contests. At night this shaped up as a good battle, but Muncie Central controlled play most of the game to win by five. The game was basically tight despite Muncie's constant lead after the first period. Attucks made a great comeback effort with 32 points in the final period. but the Bearcats of Muncie Central also tallied well, getting 28. to hang on for the 86-81 victory. YOUR’S TRULY ATTENDED the hot and exciting action at Fort Wayne. With four very evenly rated teams participating, anything was expected and that is just what happened. In the first game. Fort Wayne North, a mild surprise at being this far, but never-the-less. a good sound ball club, met Carmel, boosting as their number one attraction, the states scoring leader. Dave Shepherd. Action was hot and heavy from the w^rd go. Shepherd. playing on an extremelv bad knee, had trouble getting started, but once the long bomber got going, it was something else. Neither team could gain an advantage until later in the game when the North team pulled to a 58-51 lead with just over two mmutes to go. The North team had been led by another very fine guard. Steve Heiniger. Shephard paced the comeback that found the scoring ace tossing in the winning basket from around 30 foot with just five seconds remaining. This eliminated the North team and gave the little Carmel guard another shot at becomnig the alltime Indiana state scoring champion. THE SECOND GAME FOUND a very muscular and fine Kokomo Haworth team battling the local favorites. Plymouth, in what promised to be another exciting game And this it was. The muscle of Haworth and some cold shotting early by Plymouth let the Kokomo team gain the early advantage. Although the Pilgrims made a couple of efforts to get back in the contest. Kokomo went down at hlftime
with a 39-31 lead. The Haworth t< mi got the first basket of the second half, but that was about it for a while is Plymouth started thi r charge. Utilizing a hustling detense that lune and time again kept the Haworth team from getting the ball inside to their big men. Plym mth came back to catch up and take the lead. However, Haworth had some com back to tie it on a dramatic basket by guard Rick Nolley as the gun went off. However, Plymouth completely controlled the overtime period and won by a 71-64 scoie in overtime. THIS SET 3 HE FINAL GAME between the "Big Red ' and the Cannel tiea wnh .m. In the final period. Plymouth finally knotted the seme lor the first time in the contest as a Steve Phillips jump shot made it 4848 with 4:25 left to play. ACTION WAS SLOW AS from tins point on < aution was the word of the day. The teams weie working lor that real good shot and Carmel moved back to the front again with Greg Cline getting a couple of key baskets. With just 11 seconds left and Carmel ahead by one, Shepherd was fouled and missed the first of a one-and-one. However, Plymouth's effort to take the lead vanished when Phillips let fly ironi just inside the ten second Une with time remaining to get closer. However, with the big overhead clock, its hard to catch the time from the lloor and impossible from underneath it and ms long shot had to be taken. THE IRONY OF IT AU.
