South Central Edges Shamrocks 80-74 Saturday The North Liberty Shamrocks completed regular season play on Saturday night with their 18th loss in 19 games despite their best effort of the year against a zone defense. South Central, a very hard club to beat on the Satellite floor, topped the Shamrocks by an 80-74 final s< ore. In this game, the Lal’orte County team jumped oft to an early lead, and though they were never out of sight, managed to hold the advantage the entire game to get the victory. Neither team scored for over a minute and a half and the initi il points of the game came on a pair of free throws by Deardorf. Ernie Walls put the big Green on the board with a single point, but single charity tosses by Bluhm and Fryar made it 4-1 before John Zook added another charity toss to the Liberty total. South Central then picked up six quick points before Marty Dittmar hit the first Shamrock basket after three minutes had passed. Zook made it 10-6 but the Satellites moved steadily ahead in the next few minutes to gain a 20-8 advantage. Walls hit the last four points of the period and after the first eight minute stanza was completed it was 20-12 in favor of the Satellites. A free throw in two attempts by Greiger opened the next period. but Walls hit two more one pointers and then a jump shot giving him their last eight, to cut the lead to 21-16. South Central got a jumper by Greiger and then a three point play and another jump shot by Rosenfeld to open the gap to 12 once more. From this point on throughout the last five minutes of the first half, the scoring was well balanced and the Satellites took a comfortable 42-29 lead with

them at half time. The Shamrocks didn't fold in the second half. Often times in this disasterous season, a big lead by an opponent shut the door on the young Shamrocks and they never fought back. A bit more of the even scoring followed until the Shamrocks put together a tip by Zook and a pair of jump shots by Jim Fair and Jim Boarman. This trimmed the lead to 48-39 and from here on out the game remained in reach. The needed streak didn't develop, but the Shamrocks did not give up. After a free shot by Rosenfeld. Zook added a jumper. Ono more single point was recorded by Rosenfeld but once again it was Zook with another basket. Rosenfeld converted a lay in but a technical foul against the Satellites was turned into a free throw by Craig Anderson and the following out-of-bounds was q uckly turned into a basket by Boarman to trim the lead to 5145. The Satellites spurted again to up the lead to 10, but the Shamrocks converted the final four points of the third perid in 41 seconds to put them right back in the game 58-52. The host team moved to another 12 point lead in the first two and a half minutes of the final quarter as they jumped the arithmetic to 67-55. The Shamrocks again went to work and only a mediocre free throw shooting performance in the early fourth quarter, kept them from really closing the gap. Trailing 73-61 again with less than three minutes to play, the free throws that had been jumping out began to go in and back came the Shamrocks once more. Dittmar hit four in a row and after one of two by Bluhm was added to the Satellite total. Boarman hit two and another technical added one more by Anderson to cut the lead to six. 74-68, with still 2:17 left in the game. However, Bennett hit a lay in and then both teams were hurt by missing the first of a one-and-one situation. Bluhm stuck two more charity tosses in for SC as time now was a definate disadvantage to coach Bob Go win's crew. Halt flipped in a jumper, but Bluhm matched that to make it 80-70. Halt and Anderson each added two points in the final 17 seconds to register the final score of 80-74. Two In The Twenties The victors had two boys with over 20 points as Bluhm tallied 26 and Rosenfeld 22. Greiger added 10 to the total for the other double figure performance. The Shamrock scoring was well balanced between eight boys as Cook hit 20 to top everyone and Walis added 11 with Boarman and Anderson hitting 10 each.
