B. G. O’Reilly Guest Speaker At Chamber Meeting B.G. O’Reilly, Assistant to the Dean of Admissions at Culver Military Academy, was guest speaker at the noon luncheon of the Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, February 12. Prior to the luncheon a brief business meeting was conducted by President Hanni. Mr, Robert Stockwell introduced Mr. O'Reilly and a very interesting half hour program was presented. The Academy is most anxious for the area to be better acquainted with the splendid academic and cultural educational program offered the students. Mr. O’Reilly stated that $200,000.00 in scholarship funds arc available for those qualified each year. A film was shown on “Summer Camping." an eight week course available each summer as part of their Summer School program. This Summer program is available to both boys and girls. Refresher classes jn Math, Reading, and many other subjects are included in the schedule. Mr. O'Rielly answered questions that were asked by the members and each member was given a catalogue on the Academy. Many more interesting programs will be offered by the Chamber from time to time so please set aside the second Thursday of each month to have a fine meal, relax, and enjoy tho progrm. A spring wedding is being planned. • Falcns End Season With Two Home Games The John Glenn Falcons will end their regular season play in basketball this week with two home games. WALKERTON TOWN BOARD NEWS The Board of Trustees of the Town of Walkerton met in regular session, Tuesday evening, February 17th, with full attendance of members. H. Newton Williams and Mrs. Lee Welch, as a committee representing the Walkertoin Chamber of Commerce, discussed present unsatisfactory and assumedly unsafe practice of High School students being required to walk on the Georgia Street surface to and from the John Glenn School at the south edge of corporations limits. Contact of property owners from Roosevelt Road to the school to launch a project on their own initiative found very little response. Discussion of Board forcing the poject through an assessment improvement program was heard D ie to the narrowness of Geor gia Street southward from the 500 block of Georgia Street, the suggestion was again n < onsidered that the blacktop surface be widened by the Board and that additional area be marked off or seperted by a raised divider and be used solely for pedestrian useage. Board asr red the C. of C. representatives that the problem would be given further study and consideration. Official application papers authorized the Clyde E. Williams and Associates. South Bend engineering firm, to reapply in the towns behalf, for the request of allocation of Federal and State funds through Indiana Stream Pollution Control Board. April 15th is deadline for filing for the current year. Towns application for last year was not approved due to the lack of Federal and State funds and also the town's low rating on the eligible point system rating conducted by the State agency. North Liberty, has been chosen by the faculty to represent North Liberty High School at the 29th Session of Hoosier Girls' State to be held on the campus of Indiana University at Bloomington, Indiana. Elect Officers For PTA At Recent Meeting The PLJ I’TA met on Mond <y, February 16, 197 U at the Walkerton Elementary School. The meeting was opened by Da\id Frame. President. Rev. Kenneth Bergner, gave a devotional message centered around the song. "Where Have All The Flower* Gone.” The nominating commtitee, composed of Mis. Irvin Florian, Mrs. Jack Rizek. and Mrs. Ronald Chapman, presented the slate of officers for the 1970-71 school year. The Officers will be: Rev. Kenneth Bergner, President, David Frame, VicePresident, Mrs. Cyril Sarber, Secretary, and Lynn Stull. Treasurer. The officers will be installed at the April meeting. Mr. Donald Swing, instumental instructor in the PLJ Schools introduced several students who entertained for the group. Miss Denise Groves sang "The Ballad of the Green Beret,” and a flute duet was pr*sented by Wanda Wringer and Jerri Carlson, accompanied on the piano by Lynette Dering. These students were all wlnnm in the district contest held recently at South Bend. The program was then turned over to Dr. Bernard E. Vodnoy, 0.D.. who presented a one hour summary of his 7-part lectureworkshop on Visual Handicap* and Their Effects on Learning. ’* This workshop has been presented to schools and । olleges in 38 states. Dr. Vodnoy dealt uith the importance of eye care f.ir children, urging parents not to wait until a child is of school age to have his eyes examined. He stressed that all children should be checked by 2 years of age.
